Now the story........... ****************************************************************** Dana of Green Gables Dana Scully sighed unhappily. Her father had transfered agin, this time to a remote countryside in Nova Scotia. In the thirteen years of her young life, she had already moved seven times. Before I know it we'll probably move again, she thought bitterly. She fingered the long braids on her head as she walked up the steps of her new school. Better to get it over with than wait longer. Fox Mulder sat twirling his pencil staring in boredom up at the ceiling. Can't school start already? he thought impatiently. Just as he was about to spce out again he saw a flash of red hair going through the doorway. Curious, he turns to see who it was. What he saw made him take his breath away. A lean graceful girl with porcelain skin and light hint of Freckles catches his eyes and smiled. But what he was REALLY interested in was her hair. So red unlike the drab brown and blond haired girls always crowded around him, begging for attention. They framed her her face in two perfect braids, setting off her worldly green eyes that changed colors every few minutes. He was so distracted he didn't even hear the teacher calling him. "Fox, Fox...." "Huh?" Fox snaps back from the strance the red haired goddess put him in. "Fox, I think you need to stay after class and tell me what caught your attention so, " his teacher said with a quirky smile. He sighed. He was normally an excellent student, top of his class, actually. But sometimes he got into trouble because he was not challenged by his schoolwork and couldn't keep still with the slow pace the class was going. When they were released for lunch, he spotted the girl sitting under a tree next to the lake by the schoolhouse. "Hi," he said shyly. "Can I sit with you?" She looks up, eyes meeting his. "If you want," she whispered. "My name's Fox," he said, extending his hand. He smiles with relief when she didn't question his strange name like some of his fellow classmates did when he started school. "Dana," she said, taking the hand. But her mind was elsewhere. "What's wrong?" he asked, concerned. "It's just that I don't know wny I should bother meeting new people when I'm most likely to move anyway." "Oh?" he said, interested. He could tell immediately she wasn't going to be like other girls. "My father's a sea captain," she explained, staring out in the open water. "We move a lot. My sister Melissa helps my mom at home. But they wanted me to stay in school." "I--" He was just about to say something when a high pitched whiny voice interrupted him. "Fox! Come play with us!" Phoebe called with a group of girls standing beside her. Them again, he groaned to himself. "Anyway, I was--" He turns backs to Dana, but she was gone. He finally sees her at the lake's edge, dipping her fingers in the cool refreshing water. "Sorry, they're always--" he starts, walking toward her but she shushes him. "Why aren't you with them when they seem to adore you so?" Her strawberry lips were curved into a mischievous grin. Before he could reply, the bell rang and they were rushed back into the school building. As fox lefted the schoolhouse, he catches up with the red haired beauty. "Walk you home?" he asked, gasping for breath. "Actually, I can walk home fine by myself thank you," she retorted. "Besides, I think there's a certain golden haired girl who'd be much pleased if you escorted her home." Sure enough, Phoebe bounced by, slipping her arms around Fox's. "Walk me home?" she purred, batting her eyelashes. He allowed himself to be led away, but during the entire time his mind was on one Dana Scully. "Hi, sweetheart," greeted her mom at the door. "How was school?" Dana murmured, "Fine." But no one noticed the hidden smile on her lips for the rest of the day. The next day, when Dana walked into the school somebody'd put a candy heart on her desk. On the candy it said, "You're sweet." She laughed happily. Fox is definitely different than any boy I've met, she thought. And persistant. She glanced across the room and saw Fox staring at her. She gave the heart a lick and smiled slyly at him. His face lit up like a little boy in Christmas. Phoebe watches enviously with narrowed eyes. At lunch, Fox's heart fell when Dana was talking to the most popular boy in school, David. When he heard her laugh gaily his heart sank even lower. Depressed, he ignored all the other girls and ate in a corner. But to his surprise, he found Dana waiting for him after school. "Hi, " she greeted him. "Why isn't David walking you home?" he asked, with a hint of jealousy in his voice. "Oh, he was nice, but so boring," she said disappointedly. "And you laughed at his jokes?' "I felt bad for him." "Well, let me escort you home, m'lady," he said, slipping his hand in hers. She didn't protest, just relished the feel of her skin against his. When they got to Dana's house, he was almost sad to leave her. "I'll see you tomorrow," she said, turning to open the little gate encircling her large house. Fox hung on to her hand and brought it to his lips tenderly. Dana's heart skipped a beat. "Tomorrow then," he said, waving in the distance. Melissa flung the door open before Dana could reach it. "Who's that cute gentleman who walked you home?" she asked, grinning like crazy. "Fox Mulder." Dana felt her face get all hot and knew she was blushing. "He sure seems crazy about you." "Oh?" Dana's feet were barely on the ground when she walked to her room. From then on, Fox and Dana became the best of friends. Even though their grades rivaled the others in school, competition was accepted good-naturedly. Whenever a boy approached Dana, they could expect a Fox Mulder to put his hand on her shoulder protectively. The girls had no chance with the desirable Fox, especially Phoebe. Despite all kinds of rumors, Fox and Dana never thought past friendship, and that's the way they both wanted it. One day, Fox didn't show up at school. Knowing he was seldom late and even rarely sick, Dana worried about him all day. When school let out, she didn't hesitate to walk to the Mulders' home. A tired woman with tear-streaked eyes appeared at their door. "I'm sorry, this is a bad time......" Dana said turning to walk away. "Wait, are you Dana Scully?" The woman called her back urgently. "Fox has been waiting for you." Dana stepped into the Mulders' living room cautiously. "He's in his room," she said quietly. When Dana reached his door, soft weeping could be heard from the inside. "Fox?" "Dana." It sounded more like a cry for help than an acknowledgement. She pushed the door open to see him curled intoa ball in a corner, eyes red from crying. "What's wrong?" she asked, sitting beside him. "Samantha's gone," he whispered as though to himself than her. "All I remember is a bright light coming through the window and she was lift out--" At that point he just broke down and sobbed. He looked up to see tiny tears running down his friend's delicate face. "Why are you crying?" "Everything that hurts you hurts me." Her tears splashed on the floor. She remembered Samantha, her fun sense of humor and wonderful laugh. She had been her friend as well. Fox took his hand and wiped her tears away. They sat like that for a long while, just needing each other's presence. It was nightfall when Dana got back home. "Dana Katherine Scully!" Her mother's words sliced through the air. "Where were you? Your father and I were worried sick about you!" "My best friend needed me!" Dana flew to her room and closed the door before her mother could give her a lecture. A soft knock came from Dana's door. "Can I come in?" Melissa asked, concerned. When she opened the door she found her baby sister crying on her pillow. "It's Fox, isn't it?" Dana nodded feebly. "What happened?" Melissa sat on the bed next to her an started stroking her sister's pretty red hair. "I promised him I won't tell anybody." Melissa nodded understandingly. "He's a lucky guy. I hope he treats you well." "He does." Melissa smiled, knowing that already. Fox didn't go to school for the rest of the week, but Dana visited him everyday. "I don't deserve a friend like you," he said sadly one time. "That's silly," she had replied. "Are you my guardian angel?" he asked seriously. "As long as you are mine," she answered just as seriously, holding his hand. As the weeks went by his wounds began to heal. Fox and Dana were in tight competition again, fighting to be the best in the class. "I hope you're not going easy on me," he said grinning. "Never," she said and grinned back. When school was finally over for the summer, Dana and Fox was free to do whatever their hearts desire. Since they both had an incredible imagination they build a world of make-believe around them. The lake beside the school became the Lake of Shining Waters, the path to their houses became Lover's Lane, and the forest on the hills became the Haunted Wood. In those places their dreams were reality, and no one could touch them. As these summer days past their friendship grew closer and closer until they both knew something's bound to happen between them. They both resisted it for quite a long time, another three years to be exact, but one day, Fox couldn't stand it any longer. "Dana, why can't you admit there's something between us that surpasses being friends?" he demands. "I believe we're better off if things just stay the way they are," Dana protested. "Why? I want to believe," he cried, hurt. "I'm in love with you and I want to believe you feel the same way." "I--I dont'," said Dana miserably. "Oh, Fox--you--you've spoiled everything." "Don't you care for me at all?" Fox asked after a dreadful pause, during which Dana had not dared to look up. "Not--not in that way. I do care a great deal for you as a friend. But I don't love you, Fox." "But can't you give me some hope that you will--yet?" "No, I can't," exclaimed Dana desperately. "I never, never can love you--in that way--Fox. you must never speak of this to me again." There was another pause--so long and so dreadful that Dana was driven last to look up. Fox's face was white to the lips. And his eyes--but Dana shuddered and looked away. Could she ever forget Fox's face? "Is there anybody else?" he asked at last in a low voice. "No--no," said Dana eagerly. "I don't care for anyone like that--and I like you better than anybody else in the world, Fox. And we must--we must go on being friends, Fox." He gave a bitter little laugh. "Friends? Your friendship can't satisfy me, Dana. I want your love--and you tell me I can never have that." "I'm sorry. Forgive me, Fox." was all Dana could say. "There isn't anything to forgive. There have been times when I thougth you did care. I've deceived myself, that's all. Goodbye, Dana." "What's wrong?" Melissa was worried as soon as she saw her sister's tear-stained face at the door. Her eyes were blank, vacant. "He told me that he's in love with me." "Well, after all these years you can't blame the guy for finally telling you." "But we're moving!" Dana cried burying her face in her hands. "If I tell him I love him then it'll just make it harder to say goodbye when we leave!" Melissa could only hold her while Dana poured her heart out. "He has been everything to me! The past four years of my life! The happiest years of my life! Now he'll never know I felt the same way he did!" Melissa looks at her pain-stricken sister. "Dana, you've got a week. Tell him and make it the best week you've ever had with him. It's better to tell him than to make him suffer thinking you don't love him." Dana thought for a moment. Melissa smiled. "Go to him." Though his ears had heard her words, his heart refused to believe. She told you loud and clear: she doesn't love you, a voice inside told him. But that just wasn't so. He knew she loved him ever since she first cried for him on that lonely night four years ago. They why did she say she didn't? That snagging voice in his mind spoke again. She had no reason to lie to you. He felt the tears coming. He'd just lost the other most important girl in his life. Suddenly, a knock came from the door. "Who is it?" he mumbled, wiping the tears away. When she opened the door she she knew just how badly she'd hurt him. His watery eyes and messy hair said enough. "Fox?" she whispered. His head jerked up. "Dana! What are you doing here?" I need to tell you something, something that might make you never want to talk to me again," she said gently. Fox braced himself. "I'm moving." Her voice wavered and tears threatened to spill out her big blue eyes. He didnt know whether to laugh or cry. "I thought you were going to say you DID meet somebody!" She laughed softly. "Silly, why would I want anybody else? I DO love you, Fox William Mulder. I always have. The only reason I lied was because I thought if I told you the truth, it'd make our goodbyes more painful." He was alive again. His eyes were bright and energetic. His face had a color. "Come, my love. We don't have a moment to waste!" Taking Dana by the hand they explored the world like they never knew existed. Fox spend every waking minute of the next seven days making her happy. Everyday he found a new way of saying "I love you" and they were the most envied couple of all Avonlea. Finally, that fateful day came. Bill Scully was to transfer to Ontario. Bags were packed, furniture was boxed. Fox and Dana took their last stroll down Lover's Lane. He squeezed her hand. "It'll be okay," he said, trying to make the both of them feel better. "I don't want to leave you," she whispered, snuggling in that nook on his shoulder. "I don't either," he whispered, inhaling the flowery scent in her fiery red hair. Suddenly he had a revelation. "Dana, he said, holding her by the shoulders. "If we ever see each other again, will you marry me?" "Yes!" She hugged him tightly and tears came to her eyes. Then she spot Melissa motioning for her. "I have to go." He nodded. Before he knew it, Dana pressed her full red kips on his. He wrapped his arms around her waist. After a while she pulled away and ran to her sister. Dana waved and smiled bravely. Fox blinked back tears and waved too. He'll find her someday. ~The End~ There, that's my story. Doesn't it make you feel all fluttery inside?
