Jekyll & Hyde

Jekyll & Hyde, my favorite musical. I specifically like this 1995 version featuring Anthony Warlow, who happens to be my favorite singer. Besides the attraction of Anthony's spectacular voice, there are many reasons why I love this musical so much. I knew the story since I was a kid. I have grown to like musicals and I liked most songs in this musical. There is a dark sense to this musical, yet contains love and hope at times. There is energetic evil and grand righteousness. This musical adds to the epic battle between good and evil from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The story starts with Dr. Henry Jekyll, a medical scientist, trying to discover a way to separate the forces of good and evil in humans through medication. Just when he is engaged to Lisa Carew, he finally get satisfactory results from experiments with animals. He brought his formula to the attention of the board of governors of St. Jude's Hospital, president by Sir Denvers Carew, father of Lisa. Simon Stride, Lisa's former boy friend, tried his very best to persuade the board to ban Henry's request to test his formula on living human beings. Stride succeeded. In disappointment, Henry went to a bar where he met Lucy, a girl of the night trying to be free. A friendship sparked.

Back at home, Lisa and John, Henry's best friend, tried to convince Henry that he must not give up. Late at night, Henry decided to test his formula on himself. After an excruciating transformation, he turned into a person of absolute evil, Mr. Edward Hyde. He went out and met Lucy. In his evil self, Lucy was attracted to him. He felt an urge to kill and started a streak of murder across London. Citizens started to fear. Henry is losing control of the transformations which are starting to occur without ingesting the formula. While the relationships between Hyde and Lucy continues to grow, Henry is progressively weakened by Hyde.

Chemicals for the antidote did not arrive for a long time. He locked himself in his laboratory, hoping to stop hyde from doing evil. He decided to end this craze by directly confronting Hyde without the use of chemicals. In a terrifying battle of wills, Henry barely defeated Hyde. He destroyed everything connected to his experiments, hoping no one will ever follow his path again. At his wedding, he feels uneasy. Hyde was emerging again. This time, he held Lisa hostage. John, in order to protect Lisa, shot Hyde as he promised Henry if Hyde came again. Hyde fell and slowly turned back into Henry, dying and in his last breathes, repeating 'Lisa...Lisa.....Lisa.......Lisa.........'
