My first Tom Clancy book. This book is derived from an earlier Tom Clancy game of the same title. The stories starts with the death of a Chinese President. His successor was forced to hide away from a rebel military leader to avoid capture. As Captain Bartholomew Mackey, captain of the USS Cheyenne, you pilot this Los Angeles class nuclear submarine into the depths of South China Sea, battling tough Chinese and Russian submarines. As the most capable U.S. submarine in the region, you try to end a Chinese civil war and staying alive until reinforcements of Carrier Battle Group arrives. Of course you will survive and get decorated. But you also get to see a facet of the operations inside a nuclear submarine, the weapon systems, sensor systems and so on. Really interesting book in my opinion.

Until now, my favorite book has always been Tom Clancy's Net Force series. The new Net Force division in the 2010 FBI polices the internet. Under the command of Alex Michaels and his deputy Toni Fiorella, Jay Gridley, their best computer specialist, track down hackers in virtual reality while John Howard, the commander of Net Force Tactical Unit, and his second-in-command Julio Fernandez, hunt them down in real world. From mad Russian hackers and renegade U.S. senators to evil British scientist, the story takes the Net Force operatives from their U.S. home to Chechnya and even the secret headquarters of British Intelligence MI-6. The futuristic setting suits my half sci-fi, half reality interests. Fascinating integration of advanced technology into present day daily life is just the beginning. The author's view of virtual reality and internet is really nice, although might be a little far fetched. And the military and action aspects of this series is yet another exciting factor. Twisting story lines make the series a definite best selling material. I never could get this book off my hands. I am currently reading the 4th installment of this wonderful series. |
I started reading Rainbow 6 after I finished the computer game. John Clark, an ex-Navy Seal, is now assigned to be the commander of an new international anti-terrorist agency. Based in England, they operate through the British Special Air Services and fight terrorism around the world covertly. In the course of separate events around the world, there seems to be a bigger conspiracy going on. Reading John Clark's team in action is even better than playing it in the computer game. It is a very thick book and I still haven't finished it yet.
