On the Road Again:

Fairbanks, Alaska

Wednesday, June 27

According to the signpost in the center of Fairbanks, it is 3,000+ miles to Los Angeles [Image] and only 4,000+ miles to New York. I know that has something to do with the curvature of the earth, but it remains a puzzle. In any case, I flew a more traditional pattern, arriving in Seattle at 9 PM on Monday night, hooking up with Christopher yesterday, and getting to Fairbanks at 11PM local time with the sun still high in the sky. We had opted for a hotel with local flair-- a promised a log cabin building, but it turned out to be made of fiberboard strips, on the airport highway. We decided to keep it for the one night, since it was already late, but moved into town today where we are within walking distance of pretty much whatever Fairbanks has to offer. This afternoon we are going to the university of Alaska where they have (we are told) amazing scientific lectures. This one will be on global warming. We are debating a ride on a paddle wheel boat, but I am inclined to go out to the farm where they train the mush dogs.

Flying up from Seattle gave us a beautiful view of the terrain we will see later on from the ship-the inland passage way and all. Fairbanks is remarkably flat, but that will all change in two days when we head to Denali Park and Mount McKinley.

No, it didn't look quite like this from the plane...
