Totem Poles

We spent a fascinating afternoon at Saxman Village outside Ketchikan, where we not only saw older poles, but watched new ones in the making. The most renowned artist was working on one for the Peabody Museum in Boston, but alas, while we were there he was taking in the sun and enjoying a sandwich. Many poles were momorials to chiefs or other major figues who had died. In the rainforest, poles wear down rather quickly, so the poles we saw were primarily reporductions made during the depression under a WPA contract.
