Star Trek IV is not without its problems, but it is definately the best of the Star Trek films.  This is what I think and so do you.

An unknown alien ship is traveling towards Earth, stealing all energy in it's path, rendering the federation ships useless.  Once it gets there it begins stealing the Earth's energy and ionizing her oceans.  Kirk and Co. to the rescue.  Spock figures out that the alien ship is trying to talk to an extinct species of whale, the humpback.  So its 1986 for them, hijinks ensue and the crew saves the day by bringing the whales to the 23rd century.

  • I don't know if I'm putting more emphasis on this than it's worth, but I like the female captain at the begining of the movie.  It's almost a resolution to "Turnabout Intruder", a Star Trek episode in which a woman takes over Kirk's body because females were not allowed to captain a starship.
  • I love the klingon point of view relayed to us by the kingon ambassador.  He is a great character.
  • What is with those dorky vulcan hat?
  • I thoroghly enjoyed seeing Spock's mother, Amanda again, and played by the same actress.
  • Was somebody hungry when they designed the unknown alien ship. "Jimmy Dean's comming and is he pissed!"  Jimmy Dean-"I hate water."
  • Giving Grace Lee Whitney and Majel Barrett cameos in this movie was a nice touch; haven't seen them since the motion picture.
  • It's gonna suck when Spock follows Captain Kirk to the giant captain's ready room in the sky. All of Earth is trying to figure out what the alien ship is doing.  Kirk and Spock have the answer in five minutes.  Good thing Star Trek follows the 2 mvp's of Starfleet.  The show would have been borring following the adventures of the 99.9% other members of Starfleet.
  • My favorite exchange in the movie:
After McCoy learns of Kirk's plan to travel through time to find two whales -
Scotty to Kirk (after Kirk asks him to make a whale tank)-"You planning on taking a swim?"
McCoy to Scott-"Off the deep end Mr. Scott."
  • I have been told that this movie contains the first example of computer aided morphing of the type used in Michael Jackson videos and Terminator 2.
  • Remember what I said about Kirk and Spock?  Well keep remembering it.  Scotty says it's impossible to regenerate dilithium crystals and five seconds later Spock has devised a way to do just that.
  • I've also heard that the scene with Uhura and Chekov asking for directions was totally ad-libed. The police officer was actualy assigned to the set and the woman who explained that Alameda was in Alameda was not suppose to speak but it was good enough that they signed her to a contract, nice touch!
