The story begins as the Oni an alien race comes to Earth to conqure and rule. Earth can be spared under one condition, to challenge a randomly selected individual to defeat the invader's dauther, Lum in a game of tag by grabbing her horns. The chosen one was a schoolboy named Ataru Moroboshi. Ataru is is very flirtatious yet a flop with girls, so he is very eager to get his hands on Lum. Ataru soon dicovers that Lum could fly, thereby failing at each attempt to grab her horns. With the final day nearing, Ataru realizes he must do somthing fast or the Earths fate is sealed.
The night before the final day Ataru's so- called girlfriend Shinobu promises if he wins, she'll marry him. Ataru knows he must win and becomes very serious about winning. Ataru come up with a trick, he pulls off Lum's bikini top and then grabs her horns as she tries to get it back. Earth is saved. Ataru then scraems "now I can get married!!" Lum belives this marriage proposal is meant for her and gladly accepts.
Lum has now fallen deeply in love with Ataru. She now lives with him, plan their wedding and zaps him with her high- voltage shocks when he flirts with another woman. Shinobu is constantly mad at him, his parents wish he was never born, and his class mates want him gone so they can have Lum to themselves.
This is just the first of 195 television eposodes that ran on Japanise TV between 1981- 1986. As the show goes on thing get more and more weird, aliens from Lum's past appear and Ataru's the skirt- chasing loser keeps attracting all kinds of weidos.
