Chapter Two: Group Shot
The car pulled to a stop. From the angle of view he had at the stopping location, he could not see into the operations booth. He leapt out and ran for the door at the base of the small tower. He reached it, threw it open, and hurled himself up the staircase to the top door. He nearly knocked the door from it's hinges as he entered the booth. A young man looked considerably startled when he turned from his console of levers to see Hank standing there, heaving for breath. "Um, excuse me sir, but you can't be up here..." About ten minutes later, the gang showed up. Hank's eyes lit up when he saw the group approaching. They were all dressed casually, and exactly as they were the first day. The relived nostalgia was almost too much for his heart to bear. He was standing under the tarp at the hot dog stand across the river walkway from the Dungeons and Dragons. As he stepped out from the shade to greet them, he also spared a glance to his watch. 11:56 am. Hank could not understand exactly why he could remember that they had gotten on the ride at exactly 12:03pm that day. He checked his watch right before they had gotten on, just after the crowd cleared out. They would have the ride to themselves. As long as he had the ability to stop everything from happening, he could remain confident. Maybe after he got the whole gang out of the amusement park altogether, he could get to the bottom of this. He smiled at the group. He could see Shiela emerge from their midst and run towards him. She was smiling brightly, obviously happy to see him; which, despite how great it made him feel to see her again, seemed out of place to him somehow. She nearly plowed over a young boy running by, narrowly missing him as she kept at a full run towards Hank. He set his hot dog down on the park table beside him and looked happily--yet quizically--at the jovial Shiela. She reach him and threw her arms around him with a laugh. "Hiya, Hank!" Hank reflexively half-hugged her back, but he did it in a startled manner. Shiela was acting wierd. She definitely had not greeted him this way the last time. It was almost as though she were ecstatic to see him. It was as if... "Hi, Shiela," he eventually stammered as she drew back and smiled at him. The rest of the group arrived, all spouting a greeting of some sort. They were all happy. Every one of them smiled. That was also rather odd to Hank. But why? Eric smacked Hank on the shoulder and winked. "How goes, man?" He then turned to Diana and asked her something about getting an ice cream before they got on the new coaster. Aggrivatingly strange. He remembered Eric being rather down and depressed last time. Here he was, acting like it was the best day of his life...and just acting wierd otherwise. He tried to dismiss it, thinking that maybe he just didn't remember the first time well enough. But he remembered the exact time they got on the roller coaster. Clear as day, that memory was. He decided to steer the direction that Eric just mentioned. "Hey, good idea, let's all go get ice cream before we ride." Shiela tucked her hand around Hank's arm at the elbow, causing his eyebrows to practically meet in confusion. She looked at him and spoke as though her action was the most commonplace thing in the world. "You hate ice cream, don't you? Let's get on the ride before the afternoon crowd shows up." Well, Hank thought. This is a stumper, but having her so close... He spoke up immediately after having the thought and addressed the group. "I'm not having ice cream. You guys are. I just need to talk to you all for a few minutes. It's important, okay?" The rest of them looked somewhat perplexed, but they shrugged and okayed the request. Once he got everyone seated around the park table, he glanced at his watch as they began to indulge in their respective ice cream cones. 12:02pm. One minute till deadline. "First question, guys. Have any of you been on the Dungeons and Dragons ride before?" Everyone shook their heads and continued with their ice cream. A couple 'nope's escaped. Everyone was surprisingly in sync today.
