Horace Leonard Gold was born on April 26, 1914 in
Montreal, Canada and passed away February 21, 1996 in Laguna Hills,
California. His short fiction appeared in many of the "Golden
Age" pulp magazines including Astounding
and Amazing.
He started Galaxy
Science Fiction in 1950 where he was editor until 1961. Gold was
awarded the first Hugo award for a professional magazine in 1953
and is nominated this year (2004) for a Retrospective Hugo for
Best Professional Editor of 1953. Other awards include a 1966
Nebula for "Inside Man", a 1987
Milford and a 2001
