Doug began writing in 1995 and sold his first story, "Spirit Dance," to the Canadian anthology, Tesseracts6, in 1996. Since then, he has sold over a hundred stories to professional magazines and anthologies in twenty-seven countries, including Baen's Universe, InterZone, The Third Alternative, Best New Horror, Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, Cicada, On Spec, Oceans of the Mind, and Prairie Fire, as well as anthologies from Penguin/Roc, DAW, Meisha Merlin, Tesseract Books, and others. You can check out a complete list of his published fiction here.

He was a finalist for the international John W. Campbell Award for best new writer, and has twice won the Aurora Award (2001 and 2004) for best SF&F short fiction by a Canadian.

Doug's fiction has been translated into twenty-two languages. He has used that experience to develop his Foreign Market List, a popular resource for short fiction writers who wish to submit to non-English markets around the world.

Doug is nearly finished his first novel called "Spirit Dreams", based on his award-winning short story, "Spirit Dance." His first collection of short fiction, Impossibilia, will be published in 2008 by PS Publishing.

Some very cool news: an independent film producer has just finished shooting a short film based on Dougs story, "By Her Hand, She Draws You Down." Check here for details.

He lives just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with his wonderful wife and youngest son, and close to his oldest son.  His official web site is www.smithwriter.com and can be contacted via that site.
