Moiraine Damodred

Glossary Information

Moiraine Damodred (mwah-RAIN DAHM-oh-drehd):
tEotW: A visitor to Emond's Field who arrives just before Winternight.

tGH: An Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah.

tDR: Born in House Damodred, though not in line of succession to the throne, she was raised in the Royal Palace in Cairhien

tFoH: Rarely uses her House name, and keeps her association with it as secret as possible.

LoC: Born in 956 NE. After coming to the White Tower as a novice in 972 NE, her rise was meteoric, being raised Accepted in just three years and Aes Sedai only three more after that, at the end of the Aiel War. From that time she began a search for the young man who had (according to Gitara Morose an Aes Sedai with the Foretelling) been born on the slopes of Dragonmount during the Battle of the Shining Walls and who would be the Dragon Reborn. It was she who took Rand al'Thor, Matrim Cauthon, Perrin Aybara and Egwene al'Vere out of the Two Rivers. She vanished into a ter'angreal in Cairhien while battling Lanfear, apparently killing both herself and the Forsaken.

aCoS: Born into the then-reigning House of Cairhien. Since she had already located the Dragon Reborn and killed the Forsaken Be'lal she is already looked upon as one of those near-mythical sisters who are held as legendary heroes.

Biographical Information

Moiraine Damodred, Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah, first appeared with her then Warder, Lan in Emond's Field just before the Winternight celebrations in observance of the holiday known as Bel Tine. Her presence at this event was particularly exciting because it promised to be one of the greatest Bel Tine's in recent memory, what with a gleeman, rumors of fireworks, the arrival of the peddler's wagon, and an apparent high lord and lady (namely Lan and herself). All these things were uncommon happenings in the Two Rivers district of Andor let alone in Emond's Field itself.
Moiraine was in search of the Dragon Reborn and had traced his fabled birth on Dragonmount to Emond's Field. While there, she asked a few questions about the young men in the village to find three young men by the name of Rand al'Thor, Matrim Cauthon, and Perrin Aybara. Along with these three, she discovered two young women with the potential to be very strong in The One Power, something all too rare in recent years. The three young men were ta'veren, people around whom the Wheel of Time weaves all surrounding life-threads, perhaps ALL life-threads, to form a Web of Destiny or Pattern of an Age. Though she could not know at the time which of them was to become the Dragon Reborn.
Once she found these three, her orders from then Amyrlin Seat of the White Tower, Siuan Sanche, were to bring the Dragon Reborn to Tar Valon to protect him from being gentled and to ensure that he survive long enough to fight the Last Battle against the Dark One at Shayol Ghul. However, against the Amyrlin's wishes, Moiraine took the boys much farther. Her travels have taken her north of Shienar to find the Green Man and the Eye of the World, she found the object of the Great Hunt, the legendary Horn of Valere, she has traveled into the Aiel Waste to Rhuidean, and to many places in between.
One of her talents, obviously, is the ability to see ta'veren. Not many in the White Tower can do so. Another talent involves the small stone she wears in her hair. Though it is not an angreal of any sort, she sometimes uses it as a point of focus to concentrate and listen in on other people's conversations. A talent she learned and concealed as a child, few in the Tower are even aware of it.
Her current location is unknown. She vanished into a ter'angreal in Cairhien while battling the Forsaken, Lanfear. It is also not known if she is dead or alive except that her bond to Lan was severed after her disappearance. Some say she is still alive and will come back at some point, though it is not known for certain if she will or if she will be somehow changed by her time inside the ter'angreal.

Physical Descriptions From The Text.

tEotW, 22-23:
...melodious voice, Rand could not put an age to her. There was a maturity about her large, dark eyes, a hint of knowing that no one could have gotten young. ...she held herself with a grace and air of command that made him feel awkward and stumble-footed. She was barely tall enough to come up to Rand's chest, but her presence was such that her height seemed the proper one, and he felt ungainly in his tallness. ...dark hair, hanging in soft ringlets. ...a necklace of heavy gold link hung around her neck, while another gold chain, delicate and fastened in her hair, supported a small, sparkling blue stone in the middle of her forehead. A wide belt of woven gold encircled her waist, and on the second finger of her left hand was a gold ring in the shape of a serpent biting its own tail.

tEotW, 19:
"She's ten times prettier than anybody I ever saw. She's a high-born lady, like in the stories." "She's out of a gleeman's story." -- Ewin Finngar, Emond's Field
tEotW, 24:
"I am a student of history, a collector of old stories. This place you call the Two Rivers has always interested me. Sometimes I study the stories of what happened here long ago, here and at other places." -- Moiraine, upon meeting Rand and Mat
