When you get to the small man in the elegantly paneled room, talk to him instead of attacking. He may hire you to retrieve a package from the other side of the slums (in the ruins of the old rope guild). Do not speak to him haughtily, slyly, or abusively; Ohlo is a mage with a lot of hobgoblin and orc firepower that he will bring to bear on your skanky butt.
When you find the fortune teller, don’t attack her. Pay her a few copper pieces to tell your fortune. Pay attention to what she says - she can see the future. Finding the secret treasure room is great - not only do you get lots of booty, but you now have a safe place to retreat to when you need to rest, instead of having to trudge all the way back to the city and pay for an inn.
When you go to pick up the package from the shop, there will be a man who claims he has nothing to sell. Don’t attack him, just say Ohlo’s name and he will give you the package. Return the package to Ohlo and you have the choice of demanding more money (he will attack you), refusing to give him the package (he will attack you), or give him the potion (he will reward you). When he gets his greedy little hands on the package he will drink the contents - evidently a potion of youth - and reward you with platinum, jewelry, and a long sword +1.
The last encounter in the slums is really tough - you probably won’t be able to handle it until at least 3rd level. I recommend skipping this for now and taking a boat out to Sokal Keep.
When you do decide to take it on, a tactic that works really well is to cast sleep on the ogres so that they block the rest of the trolls from getting to you so that you can wail on one at a time. Have clerics in the background healing up your fighters and you can take them out with good rolls. Be careful - the trolls will get back up if the battle takes too long!
Clearing out the slums will get you a reward from the city clerk of gold, platinum, and jewelry.
