The coffin in area 18 has been cleverly set up to look like the master of the graveyard has already been destroyed, but this is a ruse. The vampire’s true lair is behind a secret door in the northeast corner of the graveyard (15,0). When you investigate the coffin, make sure to sanctify it, or when the vampire flees here to regenerate you will have to fight him all over again at full strength instead of his weakened state. If you need help fighting the vampire, you may want to consider trying the kobold tunnels first - there is a magic item there that can really help during the battle against the vampire.

Another piece of advice to keep in mind when girding for the battle with the vampire - memorize one or two charm person spells and some hold person spells as well. That guy may charm some of your characters, and the only way you can finish the battle is if all the ‘bad guys’ are down. You may be able to avoid taking down some of your own charmed, held characters by re-charming them to your side. Otherwise you will just have to reduce them to 0 hp and forgo their share of the experience points.

Something that might help out with level draining - when you use the Restoration scrolls to restore levels lost, your xp only goes to the minimum amount to reach your starting level. So if you are halfway to the next level when you get drained and restored, you lose that xp. You can avoid this somewhat by fighting the toughest level-draining opponents (like the vampire or the wights in the tower) just after you gain a level, minimizing the xp lost to restoration magic.

Finally, if you meet any people wandering around in the graveyard, be a little suspicious of them, even if they profess to be undead hunting. If you do happen to run into a mage wandering the graveyard who wants to join your party, he is in fact a charmed servant of the vampire and will turn against you during that battle. On the plus side, he does carry a ring of protection +2. 1
