Hatching of Clutch #3 The weather finally decided to cool off. The days were getting shorter, and the weyrfolk could stand to be outside again. With a big gathering due for the hatching, the change in weather was a very good sign. With the hatching imminent, Queen Coralyth lay on the sands as close to her eggs as her rider, Jemina, would permit, while her mate, Ishpanth stood nearby with his rider, J'ren. The entrance to the hatching grounds was busy with spectators pressing their way in while dragons flew in overhead. Gradually the welcome hum increased in intensity while the weyrleader, M'lek led in the eighteen hopefull candidates. Before anyone was ready or realized it, two eggs shattered revealing eager bronze and brown dragons. Their emergence promped an instant silence as the crowd waited for Impression. Not shy at all, the bronze charged towards the waiting candidates. One especially stood out with rainbow colored hair thanks to a weyrling trick. Unfortunately he couldn't get it all out in time. Now, as the bronze stared up at him, Josef looked down at his future. "His name is Amendath!" he announced. Following his sibling's lead, the brown hatchling knew in an instant which rider he would choose. When he reached the open arms of his new rider, Kaylar shouted, "Lasheth! His name is Lasheth!" No sooner had they chosen their riders, than two more eggs broke open as two small green's tumbled out. By now, the crowd had just about settled and watched with eager interest. Together the greens moved towards the eager girls. As the hatchings reach them two girls with dark hair step forward to greet their new life-mates. Almost at the same time, the crowd heard Meranta say, "Dasheth!" while Tyroa said, "Raesith! The next group to hatch waited till a few minutes after the first four had been led from the sands and were enjoying a hearty meal. Then, as if they had all the time in the world, the next four eggs slowly cracked. A bronze, two blues, and a green became the new center of attention. This group took a bit longer to choose, each one carefully looking at each candidate before moving towards their chosen riders. The bronze was first to choose, surprizing Tymalon when he did. "Nepseth, I know just the thing for that itch," he told his new friend. One of the blues carefully tried to walk towards the youngest candidate on the sands. Not really believing that the royal beauty was looking for him, the boy stepped aside to let the blue pass. Instead of passing by, the dragon looked up at him almost hurt. "Of course I'll be your rider, Ordreth!" Andressan said hastily when he realized the dragon had chosen him. The other blue had by then, made his choice as well, choosing a boy who was making his second debut as a candidate. This time however, he led a very hungry dragon from the sands. "Chasioth, I'm sure there is plenty of food out there," Claton reasurred him. The green was last to choose, needing a slight nudge from her golden mother. To help, the girls all stepped forward with arms outstretched to welcome her to them. At first she was very hesitant, but finally, as the last girl reached out to her, the green ran to her open arms. The change in the candidate was immediate. "Lienath, I can't believe I tried to get out of standing!" Rolanni said as she led her from the grounds. The next to hatch was the large golden egg. As expected, a golden replica of Coralyth broke free. The remaining girls all stepped absently forwards. The girls remaining were Ralia, Annice, Lina, Naketa, and Dayalla. One by one each tried to coax the new queen towards her. Funny though, she seemed unaffected by their offers and strode to one young woman she had been looking at all along. As the new queenrider bent to greet her, Lina giggled, "No, Jalith, I don't think all those people are staring at you, they are just glad to see you." Three eggs hatched following the queen's revealing another green, a bronze, and a blue. Unlike her shy sister, this green all but plowed over her rider in her haste to reach her. Taking controll of the situation, Ralia called her new green to order. "Jandisth, that's quite enough. I'm not going anywhere without you." The bronze passing by Drominac and Gervas stopped at the feet of a previously sober young man. Upon looking into his whirling eyes, Rilon all but shouted, "He says his name is Crenseth!" The little blue, after looking over the girls, saw his choice on the other side of the sands. With all the speed his small legs could muster, he raced towards him. Luckily, the boy heard the blue calling to him, and closed the gap. An excited Drominac met him halfway exclaiming, "Slow down Madroth!" Of the six eggs remaining, one fairly large egg began to rock. Slowly a crack began to form on the surface of the shell before the two halves split apart. It wasn't a bronze as expected, neither was it a brown. the crowd was very surprized to see another golden queen standing before them. Although a little smaller than her sister, she was as big as a bronze. Dayalla, Annice, and Naketa stared in amazement. They had all thought they might get greens, but never imagined they would have another chance at a gold. Slowly, the queen make her choice by resting her gaze upon the tallest of the three. "Hannith?" Annice called her by name, still not believing what she saw, "aren't you a surprize!" Two more brown dragons follow the second queen's entrance instantly capturing the attention of the remaining three boys. Another second-timer impressed as Jewen was heard to say, "Densoth, you're not going to die of hunger." The other brown craned his neck up to look into the eyes of a very tall candidate. He bent back so far he lost his balance and struggled to get up amidst giggling from the crowd. Stepping forward, Gervas reach down to him, "Let me help you up, Bendath." The last three eggs broke all at once. There was one green, one brown, and one WHITE! This was certainly a special hatching to produce two queens and a white! The white was first on her feet and first to Impress. For being one of the last to hatch, she was almost in more of a hurry than the first bronze and brown had been. As she urged her rider towards the exit and aroma of fresh meat, Naketa told her, "Ellianth, you're not missing anything." The green approached Dayalla as she watched Naketa lead off the tiny white hatchling. When Dayalla looked down, her eyes filled with moisture as they locked with those of the beautiful green. "Ingeth! you are the most beautiful of all!" Last, but not least, the last brown stumbled eagerly towards the last remaining candidate. Usually in a great mood, this candidate's smile had failed him 6 Impressions ago. The energetic brown came closer, crooning at every step. At last his smile returned. Grinning with joy, Zylater told him, "That's right, Rimbath, last the best!" This time, there were no extra candidates to lead from the sands. The weyrleaders, joined by Jemina and J'ren followed the last hatchling and rider out the exit. [ Home ] [ Apply ] [ Lower
