Hatching of Clutch 8

Many thanks to Krista for writing the story
and to Annice for helping choose the colors.

The Sand's last candidate rushes in and stops, taking in quickly the scene.  Dragons are perched everywhere possible on the above ledges, adding their voices to the overwhelming humming.  Hannith, the Annice's gold queen, and the mother of the latest clutch, sits beside her 17 eggs, and closest to a few of the largest ones ones.  Bronze Crenseth, the father, sits on the other side of the eggs, looking as proud and happy as a dragon can look. The girls hesitate on the side with Hannith, not sure whether to step up or stay away from the protective mother.

The first three eggs are rocking, two violently, but the third surprises both onlookers and candidates by hatching first.  A bronze!  The good sign steps forward cautiously, his glance carefully searches the male candidates, his mind on alert for his bondmate. Which is.....Which is HIM!  Marvelous lifemate!     "Temath!" T'lekin cries jubilantly, as he leads the dilebrate, self-controlled, hatchling off the sands.

The moment the first pair steps off the sands, four other eggs hatch.  Another bronze, a brown, and two greens  step out creeling, adding an oddly harmonizing
sound to the humming dragons.

The bronze hatchling nudges past Joran and right into Kalental.  He looks up, and the boy's face lights up so happily.  Grabbing a slate around his neck, he quickly, excitedly writes something down, and thrusts it at  Junali.   Junali readily reads the slate for his mute friend, "Kalental says the bronze's name is Jareth!"  he announces and turns around to hand the slate back to Kalental, but finds the pair already off the sands.

One green hatchling noses Mikayla and Jalista creeling pieously until Alexia calls out, "Silly Ridath, I"m over here!" At the same time, Mayania calls to her newly impressed, "Oh, Mardith!  I I think I'm going to cry, I'm so happy!  Of COURSE, you can eat over here!"  and she leads the tumbling green to the awaiting meat.

The brown stumbles twice, and willing hands help him up.  The poor hatchling looks over-whelmed.  He looks back at his mother, who nodds her encouragement, before searching the boys again.  OH!  How could he have missed?  "Wardeth!  I'm so glad!  I thought my feet would be roasted before I ever impressed," was the comment that sent onlookers chuckling as Korio led young Brown Wardeth off the sands.

Five more eggs hatch from the remaining twelve.  Two blues, a green, a brown, and a bronze emerge.  The brown and bronze hatchlings step up together, and trip on each other.  Three boys come forward to help, and one back again as  Orthen impresses brown Berinth and bronze Selith bonds with Kinet.  The third boy sighs, and then feels a nudge at his leg, "Of course I like you, Cheluth!"  Taren says, hugging then leading the blue hatchling off.

Meanwhile,  Tyler impresses blue Fieduth, and Jalista is knocked over by an over-excited green Sharith.

One of the largest eggs starts rocking. Queen Hannith steps forward protectively, then back again.  "It's probably a queen egg," one of the girls whispers to the rest. The egg continues to rock while two others hatch. A small blue stumbles into Kylaia, who immediantly announces blue Tessith's name, "Wait, you're...you're a blue!  No, I...Oh, Tessith, you're the best and prettiest hatchling here!"  and she happily helps the blue off the sands.

A green hatchling, having fallen on her nose, is crying in hungry frustration.  Sasharyn rushes forward, "Don't worry, Alliath!  I'll feed you!"

The large egg hatches!  The little golden body, being on a hill of sand, tumbles forward, and all the unimpressed girls quickly jump to aid.  One girl, brushing off a bit of sand from the hatchling's nose suddenly gasps, "Me?  Me, Mikath?  Oh, yes, that's great!  Food? Of course!"  and the excited Keiliana leads her impressed queen off the sands.

The remaining four eggs are all rocking at differnt levels.  The first to hatch?  A large blue.  The three remaining boys hesitate, all hoping to impress, but all not wanting to intimidate the newly hatched. They just stare at each other until Crenseth nudges the blue....  And, finally, Joran announces Denith as the blue hatchling's name.

Two of the remaining three eggs are fairly large, and the other is small. Everyone stares at them.  They don't even shake now, and the whole room is silently, waiting, expecting.  Weyrwoman Carah steps up after maybe 15 minutes, to announce the ending of the hatching...

Oh, but!  As if in angry defince, one egg rolls over twice, right into its also large neighbor.  They crack at the impact.  To heads emerge....A very large brown and another......GOLD!!!

The remaining girls and boys all step up together, and are now close, forgetting their semi-circle forms.

The gold hatchling is the first to get her bearings and creels pieously at the candidates, confused at their jumble....There's only one for her, though!  The perfect one!  She walks carefully over to the clump.and up to her bondmate, "ISABETH!!  Oh!  I'm so happy you chose me.  Come on!  I've got just what you want!"  Liliana calls out loudly.

The brown steps out, and gallops over to Junali, knocking both Mikayla and him down, "Ah!  Oh, Gorinth, don't eat US!  There's food over there!!"  and he lead the strong and starving hatchling off.

Mikayla stands up, rubbing her arms off, and wishing the Sands weren't quite so hot.   So involved was she in rubbing the heat off, she didn't even realize when the last egg cracks open.  But she Did noticed when she felt the second mind in hers...A bonding for life. Gasping, Mikayla looks up to see a small white hatchling blinking at her, "Arlith...Arlith..."  she whispers, the jumps over and hugs the hatchling, "ARLITH!  Absolutly, and I love you...Come on, I know you're hungry!"  And onlookers would notice tears on her face as she walked off.
