The episode opens on Movie Night at the Phillips' household. Carey has apparently all but moved in and is sitting on the sofa beside Jack. Both boys appear bored stiff by whatever movie it is that they are watching on the television, but Annie is riveted. Despite Jack and Carey complaining that they'd rather be watching a ballgame, Annie won't let them change channels from what sounds like one of those A&E classic black & white horror films. Suddenly there is a knock at the door! Molly wonders who it could be at such a late hour.
Turns out that the woman at the door is an old family friend, Margaret Joiner. She's a very proper lady with a nicely tailored dress, perfectly styled snowy white hair, and a firm belief that a ghost is trying to kill her. She is very disappointed that Fiona isn't home. Fi would understand these things, she believes. Molly very soothingly offers her tea and agrees to allow her to "hide" in the Phillips' house. As Molly leads her into the kitchen the door behind them unlocks itself, eases open and shut, and glowing footprints (actually they're male shoeprints) appear briefly across the floor before fading. Naturally, no one but us viewers sees this.
While Margaret is busy peeking through curtains and pulling them shut, Molly and the boys are in the kitchen fixing snacks and Annie is on the phone with some girl named Courtney. Jack has always thought that Mrs. Joiner was a little "out there". Carey declares that although she might be a bit "quirky", he likes her - "She's got style." Molly wonders why she has travelled all the way to Colorado from Sarasota, Florida where she has been living for the past five years. Apparently her husband has passed away and she is all alone now. The boys go off on a "Carey and Jack Show" episode with interviewer Carey asking interviewee Jack what he thinks of the whole ghost affair. Jack tells him to go ask Annie 'cause she believes in this sort of thing. The boys' act gets nailed by Mrs. Joiner, who claims that Annie must be a very smart girl. The boys have the grace to look slightly abashed. Molly offers to show Mrs. Joiner the guestroom, while the boys finally get control of the television and go to catch the end of the game.
A small digital alarm clock shows that it is 2:34 when a Noise awakens Annie. She heads to Mrs. Joiner's room wearing her blue pajamas with fluffy orange slippers. No Mrs. Joiner. Annie and her slippers tiptoe downstairs. Annie then proceeds to put the house back in order - closing open windows, setting a rack of cow bell chimes upright, shuting the fridge. She is startled by Mrs. Joiner, who claims to have been unable to sleep but after a cup of tea is ready to go back to bed. Annie and her slippers go back to bed too.
And then we begin the running gag of the show. Carey, aka: the Bottomless Pit, shows up just in time for breakfast. Seems he has a knack for turning up any time the Phillips sit down to eat. As Carey settles for a bowl of cereal while waiting for Molly's world-famous Spanish omelets with salsa and Jack proceeds to read the paper and ignore him, Annie wanders in claiming that she saw the ghost too.
Unresolved points: Does Mrs. Joiner's body ever get moved to the "correct" cemetary? Does Molly ever do the math and realize that Mrs. Joiner came to visit *after* she was dead?
