Based on the paranormal sightings of the 60s and 70s; the Mothman Profecies takes place around the small town of Point Pleasent, West Virginia but begins in Washington where Newspaper reporter John Kline (Richard Gere) and his wife Mary Kline (Debra Messing) are in search of the perfect home. Hormones arise and they speed home to have a little fun. On their way home however, a thing with glowing crimson eyes charges over the roof of the car sending the couple into a spin. When they recover, Mary has a bad concession to the head and is hospitilized and haunted by visions of crimson shadows. "You didn't see it, did you?" she whimpers to her husband. Fearing the worse, she John to have her head examined, she discoveres that a very rare tumor has been growing in her brain before the accident. She dies soon after leaving her husband distraught and heartbroken. When he comes to gather her belongings, he finds strange depictions of demonic beings inside her journal. Not giving it another thought, he packs up the property and leaves Four years later: John Kline, still unable to get over his wife's death, is in a state of constant depression. Late one night, on the way home, John loses track of all time and direction and when he comes to his senses, he is on a small road circling a farm-like community. His car dead, John makes his way towards a quaint little house and requests assistance only to have look face to face with a double barreled shotgun. "He's back, just like I told you!" The crazed man, Gordon Smallwood (Will Patton) exclaims. He throws John into the bathtub where he keeps a constant observation on the reporter. In comes one of the locale policewomen, Connie Parker (Laura Linney) to ease Gordon. She tells him to let her check John out and everything will be fine. Gordon complies and Connie and John are on their way to a motel to drop the reporter off. When asked what that was about, Connie only replies "A lot of strange things have been happening." The strange things, John discovers, are sightings of 8 foot 'mothlike' beasts with growing red eyes and large wings. These beasts seem to leave crazy messages on answering machines, stalk the townspeople, and bring forth what people desire the most in order to destroy them. The target of choice seems to be Gordon, who soon recieves forcasts and predictions of violent nature such as plane crashes and earthquakes. It isn't long until John realizes that these mothlike beasts are the same thing his wife saw before the accident and he takes it under his wing to discover the truth behind them and is dragged into a supernatural conspericy of dark proportions including errie phonecalls from a Enrid Cold, and demonic predictions of death and chaos. Mothman Profecies is true blue to the legends surrounding Point Pleasent and I'm happy to report that even after seeing the movie 3 times in 3 days, I was still scared and nervous every time 'Enrid Cold' called up. "Chaaapstiick" still makes my hair stand on end. Most people complained that the never explain the origion or what the MothMen really are but you must remember, no one knows! They are a entitiy that has been proven NOT to be a hoax but never proven they have existed except for over three hundred sightings in West Virginia and more over the world. As intense as What Lies Beneath and as disturbing as Silence of the Lambs, Mothman Profecies gets four out of four stars by this writer. Remember, it is a psychological thriller and must be treated as such. Movie Stuff: The shadow of the MothMan ((The curved Y shape)) Is seen throughout the movie but some instances its harder to see that others. Look for the Y in: The Forest, Street Roads, Mary's Tumor, the Hospital, in Gordon's Apartment and other locations. When John is discussing the MothMan with the Author for the second time, look over his left eyebrow very carefully. There is the shadow of an M over his eyebrow. Maybe a mark of the Mothman or maybe Mary? When John is losing his mind and throwing fits in his apartment, he kicks the closet door. As it swings around, look in teh mirror's center. A demon's face is seen. As Gordon calls John up and is telling John more information bout Cold ((Before Gordon vanishes)), watch the mirror John is in front of. The mirror's image moves around when John isn't showing that something is definatly not right in Poin Pleasent. This isn't a blooper but something caused by Enrid Cold <that is my guess though but I know it is not a blooper> When Gordon vanishes and John is looking through his house, look around carefully on walls, floors, and around the kitchen. Images of screaming people, moths, demons, and butterflies can be seen left and right. ((I count at least 5)) If you are curious to why the MothMan kept haunting John here's my reasoning: John refuses to let go of his wife's death and with the evidence of Gordon, the MothMan uses what people crave in order to manipulate them to its desires. I have a strong feeling that if John would have picked up the phone at the end, he would have died sooner or later. It would have driven him to the point of insanity and constant craving of finding out the truth until he would have slipped up and perished. |
