The Mighty Thor # 21: "As Turneth the Ride"

Synopsis:
Thor travels to Asgard along with Jane Foster in search of answers to Olsen's current dilemma. However, they make their way through fallen warriors to face Mangog. While Mangog keeps Thor busy, Thanos gets his hands on Odin's Map of All-Ending. Despite a valiant effort, Thor is defeated by Mangog who rejoins Thanos. They disappear and threaten all existence with the Map of All-Ending and the Chalice of Tears.

Jay's Notes:

  • Nice to see Romita back on the pencils, but unfortunately he's leaving after this story line.

Synopsis:
"Final Confrontation" 
Before leaving to confront Thanos and Mangog, Thor returns to Earth to deal with Jake Olsen's double who is under Loki's control. Odin intercedes and imprisons Loki in the double's body while freeing Jake Olsen's soul. Thor's alter ego is cleared of the charges as the double (Loki) is arrested in his place.

"Of Ashes and Defeat"
Thanos unleashes Mangog on the home world of the Colonizers of Rigel. Mangog lays waste to their capital city and kills thousands before the Colonizers are forced to turn over the Fire Jewel. Thanos and Mangog depart in search of the Designate.

Jay's Notes:

  • Spectacular art by Ladronn in the second feature.
  • Ordway does a nice fill-in job, but Jurgen's story is weak and the denouement is even weaker.

Synopsis:
Orikal provides Odin with a disturbing glimpse of what the future might be if Thanos is successful in powering the Chalice of Ruins. Odin then dispatches Balder on a mission to avert this horrible future. Meanwhile, Thor catches up with Thanos and Mangog but fails to prevent them from getting their hands on the Illumination Stone.

Synopsis:
Firelord joins Thor and the Recorder in their quest to stop Thanos and Mangog. They learn of the origins of the Illumination Stone, the Map of All-Ending, and the Chalice of Ruins, as well as the importance of the Designate. They then resume their pursuit of Thanos and arrive too late to prevent the destruction of the Designate's homeworld and her abduction. Meanwhile, Balder strikes a bargain in Odin's name with Jagrfelm the Devourer.

  • Dick Giordano comes aboard as regular inker.

The Mighty Thor # 24: "Tears of the Fallen"

Synopsis:
Firelord uses his power cosmic to track down Thanos and together with Thor, they attack Thanos and Mangog. Odin's former advisor Takaris also proves to be quite a powerful villain. Thor and Firelord are defeated and it looks like Orikal's prophecy is going to come true (see issue #22). Meanwhile in Asgard, Odin agrees to Jagrfelm's price and has him begin the construction of a mysterious weapon.

Synopsis:
Thor is unable to stop Thanos from gaining the power he desires. However, Firelord makes his way to Asgard to collect Jagrfelm's weapons and delivers them to Thor who has cleverly taken out Mangog. The Recorder sacrifices himself and gives Thor time to equip himself. Thor confronts Thanos and strips him of the Stone of Illumination which ends his threat.

Jay's Notes:

  • Okay, I've said it before, but enough with the "I say thee nays". They're driving me crazy!!

Synopsis:
Thor returns to Asgard and learns that Odin, who must take his Odin sleep to replenish his health, has left Sif in charge of the realm. Thor then makes his way to Earth and resumes the life of Jake Olsen. Unfortunately, the Absorbing Man interrupts his return and kidnaps Jane Foster to help his beloved Titania who's dying of cancer.

Synopsis:
The Absorbing Man eludes the police and brings Jane Foster to his hideout so she can help his beloved Titania. Thor seeks help in trying to locate Jane and Iron Man whips up a tracking device that will locate her pager. Thor gets close and spots the Absorbing Man. Their battle is interrupted as Titania's condition gets worse and Thor must get her to a hospital.

Synopsis:
Thor and the Warriors Three spend a bit of time enjoying the sights and sounds of New York City. Unfortunately, the Wrecking Crew attack them in hopes of absorbing their Asgardian life force to restore their lost powers. Thor and the Warriors Three fend off the Wrecking Crew but not before Hogun appears fatal drained of his life. Meanwhile in Svartalfheim, Jagrfelm reveals that the mysterious item Odin granted him power over was the Cast of Ancient Winters.

The Mighty Thor # 29: "Whence Comes Death"

Synopsis:
Thor manages to keep Hela from claiming Hogun by reviving him with a couple of lightning strikes. Hogun is brought in for more serious medical attention, but his situation is still grave. Thor catches up with the Wrecking Crew and takes them down hard. Meanwhile, Malekith kills Jagrfelm and seizes the Cast of Ancient Winters. And in Asgard, Sif responds swiftly and orders a potion to save Hogun made.

Jay's Notes:

  • I really enjoyed this issue. Kubert's detailed art and solid inks from Hanna really helped give this issue a fresh look and feel.

The Mighty Thor # 30: "Winter's Edge"

Synopsis:
Malekith plays around with the Cask of Ancient Winters and unleashes a fraction of its power to send an ice warrior, Pentigaar, to Earth to seek out Thor. However, Balder, who is on his way to deliver the potion to save Hogun's life, runs into Pentigaar and with help from Beta Ray Bill defeats the ice creation. Balder gets the potion to Hogun and keeps the brave warrior from Hela's embrace. 

Jay's Notes:

  • Thor is busy in deep space along side the Avengers who participated in the Avengers: Infinite miniseries.
