Ship Rating Methodology
SHIP RATINGS:
This section provides data for several ship classes of the WW2 era for the
Corpen 18 rules. Additional
ship ratings will follow, and in addition the rating criteria listed above can
be used by the players themselves to rate other classes. Crew qualities listed
below should be listed only as a general guideline and an overall fleet average,
as all navies had ships whose performance was either above or below the par.
Therefore players should feel free to assign different crew ratings than ones
indicated below. Note that no navy is rated as having Elite crews. Only select
ships with exceptionally capable crews and commanders should be given such a
rating.

SHIP RATING METHODOLOGY:
Category: all battleships, battlecruisers, and aircraft carriers are considered
Capital Ships. Light and heavy cruisers, "pocket" and coast defense battleships
are considered Cruisers. Destroyers, escort destroyers, torpedo boats, frigates,
minesweepers, and corvettes are considered Escorts, and each Escort playing
piece in the game represents two actual ships. PT-boats, Schnellboots, MTBs,
MGBs, MAS-boats, and other torpedo- or gun-armed fast attack craft (with
displacement of under 250 tons) are considered FACs, and each FAC piece
represents four actual ships.
Protection: belt thickness/50mm +1, up to a maximum value of 10. Vessels with splinter protection and other
similar light protection schemes are rated as having armor protection of 0, but
are nevertheless still treated as armored vessels. "Fragile" rating is assigned
to vessels which have shown poor ability to absorb damage or unbalanced armor
protection of other parts of the ship, whereas "rugged" ships represent ships
with uncommon structural strength, particularly good subdivision or armor
protection of other areas, etc.
If belt and deck armor yield different protection ratings, record the
belt-derived value first, then the deck-derived value after a /.
Unarmored ships are rated according to their tonnage.
Protection/ Gunnery rating |
Gun caliber | Tonnage (unarmored ships only) | Belt armor (inches) | Deck armor (inches) |
U1 | 12.7mm | 10-25t | ||
U2 | 20mm | 25-50t | ||
U3 | 37-57mm | 50-200t | ||
U4 | 76-90mm | 200-500t | ||
U5 | 100mm | 500-1000t | ||
U6 | 114-130mm | 1000-2500t | ||
U7/1 | 133-140mm | 2500-4000t | less than 1 | less than 1 |
2 | 150-160mm | 2 | 1 | |
3 | 170-180mm | 4 | 2 | |
4 | 203-254mm | 6 | 3 | |
5 | 280-305mm | 8 | 4 | |
6 | 320-330mm | 10 | 5 | |
7 | 340-356mm | 12 | 6 | |
8 | 380-400mm | 14 | 7 | |
9 | 406+mm | 16+ | 8 |
Each torpedo spread represents 4 torpedoes. Ships
which cannot launch all of their torpedoes into a single broadside aspect have
two torpedo numbers (each equal to half the total spread number) separated by /.
Reload torpedo spreads are put in parentheses.
Battery to-hit modifiers represent the number of guns that can fire into a given
facing (forward, broadside, aft, in that order)
1-2 guns: -2, 3-4: -1, 5-7: 0,
7-8: +1, 9-10: +2, 11-12: +3, 13+: +4
Since Escort and FAC-class ships in the game represent two and four
actual ships, respectively, use the total number of weapons for all the ships
represented by the model/counter, not just the
number of weapons on one ship.
Range: divide the range of the gun (in kilometers) by 4.
Rate of fire: guns with caliber greater than 203mm are considered to have Very
Low rate of fire. 160mm-203mm guns have Low rate of fire. High rate of fire (H)
is assigned to various light automatic weapons. All other weapons do not have
any special rate of fire-based rules, and do not receive a rate of fire value on
their ship displays.
Movement:
Each movement point represents 5 knots. When the result is an odd number, the
first movement phase movement allowance is greater by 1 point than the second.
Fire Control:
I: local control.
II: WW1-era directors.
III: Interwar-era directors.
IV: late interwar, early WW2 directors.
V: late WW2, advanced, radar-assisted directors.
The above applies to capital ships. Cruisers and escorts usually have lower
FireCon ratings (by 1 and 2 levels, respectively) than contemporary capital
ships. FACs are not assigned fire control, since all gunnery combat between FACs
takes place at 0 hex range.
