The Hockey Mask Jason wears fast became an Icon synonymous with Jason Voorhees. It was not until the 3rd movie in the series however that he first got the Hockey Mask. A symbol so prevalent that many people even today whenever they see a Hockey Mask think of Jason. In stores around Halloween you can buy cheap plastic versions of Jason's Hockey Mask. Although they are not the same as the ones used in the movie. Careful observers and fans of the movie series will know that there were several different masks used in the film series.

The mask just like Jason has taken a hell of a beating! In "Friday The 13th Part III Jason's mask gets a nice split just to the center left of the top of the mask by an axe. It's kind of hard to say whether or not Jason was still a normal mortal at this point simply because he has already taken a lot of fatal punishment prevalent by one of his victims terrified comment:
"You can't still be alive... You can't be!"
More like a "metaphysical, supernatural psycho-metaphor, the Dark One, the epitome of wanton Evil." (Fangoria no.75)

At the end of "Friday The 13th Part VI" Jason is lured out into the middle of a Crystal Lake by Tommy Jarvis where he gets the left side of his hockey mask broken off by an outboard boat propeller, probably his neck broken to as you hear a loud crunch and his head snaps to one side. Jason then sinks to the bottom of Crystal Lake held down by a heavy chain around his neck where he spends the next ten years getting a little fish nibbled and water logged.

Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder) returns for more killing in Part VII when Tina Shepard (Lar Park Lincoln) a girl with telekinetic powers wishes for her father to return who died in Crystal Lake. Unfortunately instead of her father returning from a watery grave she brings Jason back instead.

It is in this movie that Jason looses a mask altogether when Tina wills the straps on the mask to super tightness squeezing Jason's head. The mask then snaps in two and we finally get to see what Jason looks like under that mask... Not a pretty sight.

Jason returns yet again with a new hockey mask in "Friday The 13th" Part VIII Jason Takes Manhattan. I kinda liked the old mask myself personally I think it had more character. Jason gets his new mask after a boat anchor drags a high voltage electrical cable across the bottom of Crystal Lake touching the cable to Jason's lifeless body bringing him back to life. He climbs on board and gets his new hockey mask from "Jimmy" who had used it earlier to try to frighten "Susie" his girlfriend. Jason makes a better use for it as he does them both in, in his usual classic style.

Strangely it does not take long for his new mask to take on a lot of the characteristics of his old mask. This is especially true if you note carefully that Jason's newly acquired hockey mask has a "split" near the top left very similar to his mask from Part VI and Part VII.
