"Return as Undead" Option
- Faramir - 9 January 1999

This idea was suggested to me by a non-UO player when I was talking about UO: why not be able to return as an "Undead" instead of playing as a ghost or resurrecting with penalties? This could provide interesting play experience both for the person who died (not normally so much fun!) and for others who interact with the dead character.
Advantages:
- you get to keep some or all of your gear (as if you'd resurrected with penalties) and stats (as if you were a ghost)
- you look like a lich (or other undead, either random, selectable, or karma-based?) -- cool!
- you can play like a normal character
- in certain moon phases you might get extra strength (hitpoint/mana regeneration, for example)
- possible enhancement: surviving as undead could cause your stats to climb (up to some reasonable maximum)
Disadvantages:
- you're permamently criminal (i.e., you're a monster)
- various skills have a negative modifier in accordance with your "undead" state
- your only healing is passive healing (i.e. hp regen) or the spells
- susceptible to silver weaponry
- can't cast Recall or use Gates
- can't use this option above ground during the day, and if you are above ground and daylight arrives you die
- if you "die" while undead you *must* play as a ghost -- only one chance
So...
Basically this would be a good option when you die. You have some chance of making it back to your house or other "safe" area to "die" when the sun comes up without losing all your stuff. But you only get one chance. I think this would be pretty fun and potentially you would see a lot of people trying to run the gauntlet of a dungeon as a lich...
