Proposed Farming Skill

Farming System Goals
- breeding animals: reagent-related animals, pets
- growing crops: reagent plants, food plants
- make Farming skill a worthwhile addition
- reduce need for massive NPC reagent spawns
Options for Farm Areas
- in a field/plot of land: "farmhouse", new style of building
- size of a large smithy, divided into quarters like the smithy
- 1/4 enclosed "small farmhouse" area, could be used for vendors, etc.
- 3/4 fenced and slightly elevated plots, can be any of the following:
- farmland: "corral" or "pen" (grassy) for breeding
- soil: each 1/4 can be further divided into 1-tile-wide strips for different crops -- soil color could be used to indicate these "strips"
- water pool: breeding aquatics
- orchard: apple, pear, etc.
- plots must be renewed regularly, success depends on Farming skill
- for certain crops only, can grow in a house craftable, i.e. flowerpot
- can grow crops in existing ("NPC") fields as well
- plant on tilled-soil tile: that tile of farmland is "yours"
- harvesting someone else's crop is criminal, guards will protect farmland in justice regions
Crops
- require Farming skill to plant and harvest efficiently
- vines planted in soil
- direct planting in soil
- use seeds, require watering
- carrots, turnips, pumpkins
- crop-type reagents
- nightshade, ginseng, blood moss, mandrake root, garlic
- some of these might be sun/moon specific
- need to grow fast enough to eventually replace NPC vendors; probably need to grow in stacks to keep item count down
- wheat fields (wheat as animal feed, or convert to flour)
- orchards can be provided for tree-based fruits
- "craftable" flowers, hedges, etc. for houses
Breeding
- fish hatcheries (require Farming to establish, Fishing to harvest)
- spawn fish for fishing
- spawn oysters for pearl (jewelry) and black pearl
- farmland breeding for materials
- chickens (eggs), sheep (wool), spiders (silk)
- keeping animal in pen will keep animal tame up to 10x longer than normal, dependent on Farming skill (checked when pen is tended)
- animal must be tame to be harvested, return per animal depends on Farming skill
- farmland breeding for pets
- keeping in pen keeps animal tame up to 10x longer than normal, dependent on Farming skill (checked when pen is tended)
- can raise pets and improve their stats and skills: keeping them on a farm improves their potential, practice in the field (i.e. combat) helps them reach it
- beehives (honey), return per hive depends on Farming skill
Related Issue: non-crop reagents
- sulfurous ash: (not Farming-related) alchemy on certain earth/dungeons/ores? plus earth elementals...?
- black pearl: (along with above Breeding ideas) fishing in certain areas should have a chance of catching oysters/pearls
- spider's silk: possibly allow breeding of spiders, but mostly from spiders in the wild...?
