The Feudal System and Order/Chaos Guilds

Overview

UO's guild system is flexible enough to allow a more traditional feudal system to be part of the game, by overlapping it with the current Order and Chaos guild structure.

Currently, Order and Chaos guilds do not reach their true potential (someone on CoB referred to them as the "Pimp/Ho Wars" which certainly has a lot of truth in it). I think that Origin should re-work that system to make it more interesting to those involved, and at the same time provide great opportunities for combat as well as roleplaying and quests.

What I'd like to see would be a shard-wide tracking of fealties within Order and Chaos guilds (this can be done since the fealties are tracked on the guildstones). Certain titles would be reserved (meaning that they could not be granted, and could not be changed) for these guilds and awarded *automatically* based on the number of followers. For example, each shard could have perhaps two or three "Order Lords" and "Chaos Lords" who would, in the game fantasy, be the direct lieutenants of Lord British and Lord Blackthorn. We would see titles like "First Order Lord" and "First Chaos Lord" reserved for the leaders of the largest factions of the largest Order and Chaos guilds. These titles would be awarded based entirely on the number of followers.

Lesser "automatic" titles would also be available, and assigned to leaders of other large factions within the Order/Chaos structure. Titles like General, Lieutenant, and Captain are what I had in mind -- a more military-leaning title system than the standard feudal titles like Duke and Baron.

There would also be certain reserved titles that could be granted only by those with sufficiently-high automatic titles, as rewards for their faithful followers.

Now that any guild should can to join the Order/Chaos structure, the fame requirement formerly applied to the guilds should be assessed on a per-person basis as the requirement for bearing an Order or Chaos shield. In other words, anyone can be in an Order or Chaos guild, but only the high-fame members can bear the shields. Only those worthy of the shields would be eligible for the reserved Order/Chaos titles. It would be even better if some measure of "Virtue" could be applied to these "Virtue Guards," such as a no-looting requirement, or no-thieving, or a lower murder-count buffer (i.e., two murders instead of the usual five).

The effect that I think we would see would be fierce competition for the few available titles amongst those involved in the Order/ Chaos system, and interest generated amongst those not involved. Seeing "the Second Chaos Lord" in town would actually be a pretty cool thing. Seeing him killed in battle would be something worth telling about. Protecting him would be a prime duty of the lesser-ranking members of the Chaos guild structure. That sort of thing.

Titles

The titles would be granted automatically based on a minimum fame requirement and the number of guild members who have sworn loyalty to the leader in question. Only those who meet the qualifications in this table would be eligible for the unique shields.

Title Fame Requirement Selectivity (ranked by number of followers)
First Order (Chaos) Lord tier 5 single highest-ranked character that qualifies
Second Order (Chaos) Lord tier 5 second highest-ranked character that qualifies
Third Order (Chaos) Lord tier 5 third highest-ranked character that qualifies
Order (Chaos) General tier 5 next five highest-ranked characters that qualify
Order (Chaos) Marshal tier 4 next ten highest-ranked characters that qualify
Order (Chaos) Captain tier 3 next fifty highest-ranked characters that qualify
Order (Chaos) Lieutenant -none- next fifty highest-ranked characters
-no special title- tier 3 no restriction

It would be good if the titles could be automatically moved to the appropriate character out of the characters currently on-line in the shard, to prevent someone from earning a high title and never logging in (that's no fun!). That might not be a problem, however; hopefully, these titles would be something to show off.

In addition, the top-ranking Lords might be entitled to additional unique items such as colored Order/Chaos shields, special armor, etc.
