The Secret Circle and their Corresponding Immortals

In the trilogy, "The Secret Circle," there have been several references made to the belief that either L.J.Smith used the Gods and Goddesses mental attributes when making her characters and/or maybe the characters were once the Goddesses/Gods themselves. This is exceptionally true for the girls of the circle. For instance:

Diana is Diana, Queen of the Witches (a.k.a.-Aradia for those of you who are Wiccan)
Faye is Hera
Cassie is a Calliope and/or all of the Muses of the Arts Combined...She is also mentioned to being the mortal Cassandra of Troy
Susan is Aphrodite/Venus
Deborah is Diana(roman)/Artemis
Laurel is Persephone
Melanie is Athena

The Introduction to the Idea

In "The Initiation" and also at least once in another part of the trilogy, Cassie goes into Diana's room and looks at the Greek Prints that hang there...pictures that always remind her of the other girls in the club. This is where the idea began. Some of the characters have been warped slightly from their original Goddess look a like but then again, nobody's perfect...not even the Grecian Immortals. ^_^

Diana and her Immortal Twins

Diana is seen as being Diana, the Queen of Witches.
A little about the Goddess: Diana, Queen of Witches may not seem too familiar to many people both Wiccan and non-Wiccan because the common name for Diana is Aradia. Aradia was like a female Christ figure from the Ireland area that died while trying to save mankind. She is the daughter of the Mother Goddess and the Patroness of the poor. Therefore, she became the Queen of Witches.
A little about the Character: Diana Meade shares a little in common with the Goddess. Both of them are leaders, they are both strong will and good, and they are both known for being slightly innocent in some things (in terms of Aradia).
Other Characters that Diana is seen through L.J.Smith: Probably the biggest one would be the Mother Goddess, the feminine version of Wicca/Witchcraft. Another entity that she is mentioned to be similar to is a member of the middle ages along with Cassie and Adam.

Cassie and her Immortal Twins

Cassie is seen as being a Muse.
What the book says (p.309 "The Power"): "'I'm going to do a picture, I believe,' Diana was saying thoughtfully, 'to add to my collection. What do you think of the Muse, with the moon and stars around her, looking inspired?'"
A little about the Goddess: A little about the Character: Other Characters that Cassie is seen through L.J.Smith: Cassie, like Diana, is seen as part of a previous period. She is seem as a shy forest nymph that loves to dance and is in love with Pan (Adam). Another entity that she is seen as is Cassandra of Troy in all of her sorrow and strength.

Faye and her Immortal Twins

Faye is seen as being Hera.
What the book says (p.129): "'That's Hera, queen of the gods. She could be--jealous.' Cassie bet she could. The young woman was tall and proud, with an imperious set to her hcin. But it was her eyes that held Cassie. They seemed almost to blaze from the print, full of passion and will and danger. Like a crounching jungle cat..." A little about the Goddess: Hera is the Queen of the Gods and the Protector of marriage. She was known to be VERY jealous and she was constantly scheming to find out why her husband was cheating on her. She was a proud Goddess and many feared to cross her patience in fear that she would strike out at them. Also in close relation to the Goddess of the Hearth (a.k.a-fire)
A little about the Character:Faye is very similar to Hera except for the fact that she's not into marriage. Faye is also very jealous and schemy when she wants to be. She manages to rank herself on the top when she constantly followed Black John (in a similar fashion to Hera being Zeuses wife).
Other Characters that Faye is seen through L.J.Smith: She is mainly seen as jungle cats and queens and/or Bronze Warrioresses. Seductresses...dark Witches...the dark form of Hecate and the Mother Goddesses...the exact opposite of Diana.

Melanie and her Immortal Twins

Melanie is seen as being Athena.
What the book says (p.236): "'Athena. She was the goddess of wisdom. She never married either, like Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. All the other gods used to go to her for advice.' It was a tall goddess with a wide brow and clear, clam gray eyes. Well, of course they're gray; it's a black-and-white print, Cassie told herself. But somehow she felt they'd be gray anyway, and full of cool, thoughtful intelligence."
A little about the Goddess: Athena was said to have been born from the head of Zeus fully clohed in armor and with the intelligence that no one could even attempt to compete with. She is said to have been the guardian/protectress of Athens and she is also said to have talked to and given advise to all of the Great Generals of the Grecian Period. She was the mind behind the destruction of Troy and the Maiden behind the Myth of Achilles.
A little about the Character: Melanie is everything like the Goddess but quieter and strict, like her great aunt. She is intelligent, communicates with rocks, and always seems to have a thoughtful expression on her face.
Other Characters that Melanie is seen through L.J.Smith:She is seen to be an "Alice with Glasses that seem so natural", a scholar, and at Halloween...the biblical Sophia.

Suzan and her Immortal Twins

Suzan is seen as being Aphrodite.
What the book says (p.128): "'This one's Aphrodite, the goddess of love. See the cherubs and doves around her?' Cassie gazed at the woman in the picture, who was reclining on a sort of couch, looking beautiful and indolent. Something about the pose--or maybe ist was the exposed bosom--reminded her of Suzan."
A little about the Goddess: Aphrodite is seen to be the Goddess of Love and Seduction. She was said to be crueler and much more cunning then the Roman Goddess of Love...Venus...and yet they were supposedly the same person. She was born from the bubbles in the Sea and had a Son/Servent named Cupid that flew around spreading love and falling in love himself with a girl named Pyche. Aphrodite seemed to have a little fling with the most arrogent and handsome God on Mount Olympus...Mars, but then she trully fell in love with the ugliest...Zeus's personal welder of the lightning bolt.
A little about the Character: Suzan is kind of like the Goddess of love in a lot of her relationships and obsession of beauty. She also fits the Goddesses personal attributes in her voluptuous nature. Suzan loves beauty and she's not afraid to share it with anyone...in fact, she loves to do so. She also has terrific insight even though you'd never get her to admit it.
Other Characters that Suzan is seen through L.J.Smith: Suzan is seen as a beautiful girl and as Aphrodite...in fact, she even dresses up like her for Halloween.

Deborah and her Immortal Twins

Deborah is seen as being Artemis.
What the book says (p. 129): "'And this is Artemis.' Diana moved to another print. 'She was goddess of the hunt. she never married, and if any man saw her bathing, she had him ripped to pieces by her dogs.' The Girl in this picture was slim and lithe, with toned-looking arms and legs. She was kneeling, aiming a bow. Her dark hair fel in tumbled waves down her back, and her face was intense, challenging. Deborah sometimes looked like that, Cassie thought."
A little about the Goddess: Artemis is an independent female that is the Goddess of the Moon and of the Hunt. She is also a sworn maiden and was worshipped by the Amazons. She would have any male that would see her bathing ripped apart by her stags and not think twice about it. Her brother was the God Apollo and they were twins by Leto...a mortal woman that went to the tiny island of Delos to hide from Hera's wrath ('cause Artemis and Apollo were Zeus's kids).
A little about the Character: Deborah is Artemis to a 'T'. She is strong, independant, a sworn virgin, fierce, and holds a cresant moon tattoo on her body. She is a tom-boy and even at the dance the guys are afraid of her. She almost seems to be twins with Nick even though they are first cousins.
Other Characters that Deborah is seen through L.J.Smith: She is seen to be an Amazon Warrior and/or a Goddess of the Forest.

Laurel and her Immortal Twins

Laurel is seen as being Persophone.
What the book says (p.236): "'Yes. That's Persephone, daughter of the goddess of growing things.' Diana's voice was soft with tiredness, but she smiled at the picture. It showed a slender girl laughing as she picked an armful of flowers. All around her it was springtime, and her face was filled with the joy of beingyoung and alive."
A little about the Goddess:Persophone was the Goddess of the Spring and of the Flowers. She was the daughter of Demeter and while she was picking flowers one day with her maidens and nymphs, Hades...the God of the Underworld came and abducted her from the sun. Because while she was in captivity, she ate six pieces of food, she was sworn to have to live in the Underworld as Hades Queen for six months of the year. That's how we have that Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. When Persephone goes down into the Underworld, her mother is so unhappy that she no longer tends the crops.
A little about the Character: Laurel is like the Goddess Persephone in the way that she is airy and tender hearted. She also likes herbs, just like Persephone.
Other Characters that Laurel is seen through L.J.Smith: Like a little nature sprite or spirit that flies around.

Adam and His Corresponding God

A little about the God: Herne is the God of the Forest and also the Companion to the Goddess...sometimes seen as Diana. He is said to be the most handsomest God alive and yet he has eyes only for the Goddess...he is her consort. He is brave, kind, fearless, commanding, King of the Forest, and Friend of the Animals.
A little about the Character: Adam fits the God pretty well until Cassie comes along and his alliegence changes. He is seen several times like Herne and even plays him at the Halloween ball. He is loyal and commanding...just like the God. He even has his dog Raij that is very particular about people.
Other Characters that Adam is seen through L.J.Smith: He is seen as Pan, the Flute player, a "parfit gentil knight" by Meridith, in a time prior to this lifetime with Diana and Cassie, and the brave Knight in Shining Armor type of guy.

Other Characters and Their Match-ups

Nick-Apollo, God of the Sun and Deborah's Twin brother

The Story Behind the Original Adam and Diana

When Adam and Diana were going out before Cassie came along and the soulmate principle had started up...Adam was supposed to be Herne, the Horned God and Diana, the Goddess of Nature. They played the major roles of the Goddess and God of the Wiccan Religion.
You see, in Wicca, the original story dealt with the Goddess of whom was the mother of everything of nature and such. The God dealt with hunting, the woods, and the all of the animals. It's like the chicken and egg idea in which no one really knows the true story in which they had met. But we do know that the seasons are caused by them.
Technically, they met and fell in love...this is early on in the year, then they consumated during the beltane fires, lived in happiness during a period of time. During the winter the God dies, and the Goddess is pregnant. The Holly King dies on Yule and the Oak King is reborn. On Midsummer or the Summer solstice, the God is happy and in a "high." And so the cycle continues...
