The History of
by Englebert Dimwiddie
Where did WLIQ come from?!?
My guess is a few too many bottles of Hamm's or Hauenstien!
Actually, it seems that the idea for dates back to 1988 from recently
discovered recordings. Bro Jones and his brother Mojo were just goofin' around playin'
music reminiscent of Jimmy Hix's show and ads for Rev. Mojo's new show and book "Let The Lord Show You The Way Whilst I Make A Buck." The
announced frequency was 1360 kilohertz with 250 watts though power was closer to 100 watts on 7415Khz.
These shows never actually got air play back in 1988 and after listening to
them I can understand why. In fact
The first official broadcast was back in 1992 with a brief airing,
following a "Radio FU" test transmission,
that did not obtain any response It's not a wonder considering the transmitter location
and very low power output at that time. It's probably best they weren't heard anyway.
The first broadcast that obtained any
response from was aired on December 7th, 1997 at 1813 UTC. This broadcast again featured 1360 kilohertz with 250 watts and
some of the 1988 recording. This would explain the less than acceptable audio quality.
Jimmy Hix, who was announcing that day decided to drink-- ah-- echo up things
just a bit too much. It is
unfortunate that this broadcast did not give the station the greatest
image. The broadcast was aired on USB and with the amount of echo
used by the station op, an incredibly difficult time in understanding what
was being spoken resulted.
We at apologize for that broadcast and hope you will enjoy
future programming.
Thank you for tuning in and for checking out our website.
UPDATE: Jimmy Hix Jr., while guest
deejaying at WUNH, died in a freak accident.
Reports state that Jimmy's half-brother of sorts, Melville Grunion killed Jimmy.
Jimmy had a way of screwing up broadcasts!
Anyone that's heard later Jimmy Hix shows would know what I mean!
Well, the end result was Jimmy's replacement announcer "The Don"
Ducktail.
We all hope you've enjoyed Ducktail's brand of rab, surf, and r&b!
That was what WLIQ was all about...
We are back stronger than ever!!!!!!!!!!
Keep DXing.
