Episode 11: Close Encounter
-------------------------------------------------------------------
In the last episode of Robotech II: Sentinels, Guardians of Earth a tragedy has
taken place as the shuttle carrying Admiral Lisa Hayes to the Ark Royal is
attacked by the Invid. Monitoring the events from the SDF-3, Major General
Rick Hunter sees the shuttle explode as it enters the atmosphere of Tirol.

Saddened by the loss of his wife, Rick Hunter has temporarily handed command
of the SDF-3 over to General Reinhardt.

The Invid Regent is enraged by the inavoidable defeat of the attackforce sent to
test the strength of the fleet. A fleet the Regent beleives to be manned by the
Giants.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The internal structure of the Hive echoed the voices of the Regent and Tesla as
they discussed the results of the attack. None of the Scouts had survived. And
worst of all, even the Carriers had been destroyed.

"I'm asking you a simple question: Why haven't the Scouts broken through
this fleet like they had been ordered?" The Regent waved his arms to
emphasize his question.

Tesla nodded, then responded. "My Regent, from what we have monitored, the
fleet hiding behind Fantoma, consists for the largest part of vessels manned
by Giants. However, a considerable part is of unknown design. Furthermore, the
Scouts have executed the given order to the letter. Penetrate the fleet as deep
as possible to test the enemy's strength. We did not know the
resistance was going to be this heavy."

The Regent bowed over to Tesla. "They failed me! Tesla, you better not fail
me." And with this remark, the Regent turned and dismissed Tesla.

Outside the Regent's cell, Tesla stood for a while. "The Regis was correct. With
this... this creature, our race is doomed." He continued his path to his own
private cell. A thought formed in his mind. Tesla shivered. "I couldn't do... that."

The bed looked like someone had slept in it. But Rick Hunter hadn't had a good
nights rest. He was tormented by the vision of a shuttle, bursting into flames.
He sat at the side of his bed, holding Lisa's picture in his hand. A tear formed.
Rick blinked his eyes, then swallowed. Biting his lowerlip, his finger followed
the lines of Lisa's face. Her long hair, the faint smile, her brown eyes. The
picture was an older one. She had her hair hanging alongside her face. A happy
face. The picture had been taken after Rick had proposed to marry Lisa.

The doorbell rang. Rick sighed, then got up. An unfamiliar face looked at him.
It was a girl. A fighterpilot. a Sergeant. And she looked about as sad as he
did. His eyes narrowed as he tried to remember ever seeing her before.

"General, my name is Karen Penn." The girl said. "Well, come in." Rick let
the girl pass. It wouldn't be polite to refuse her. "What can I do for you,
Sergeant?" Rick didn't even mind that a member of the Service visited him at
home.

"General, I know you are very upset right now. But I have flown over the
location were we lost the shuttle." She paused, and Rick could see Karen was
biting hard not to start crying. She removed a tear that was forming. "General, I
have seen a trail running to the planet." Rick raised his eyebrows.

"What kind of trail?" He looked determined at her. "From the location where the
shuttle has exploded, I have seen a path of smoke and small pieces of metal.
General, you know the shuttles can detach the cockpit. I beleive that Jack
has done that."

"Jack?" Rick immediately knew who she meant. "Sergeant Baker." Karen broke
when she heard his name. "Yes." She said with a trembling voice.

"Why are you here to tell me this?" Rick offered Karen something to drink.
"Thank you. I can prove it. I wanted to tell you, because it's possible Admiral
Hayes and Sergeant Baker survived."

Karen told Rick she had made a recording with the guncamera. Rick aggreed
to view that footage with her in the debriefingroom. Karen got the film. Together
they watched the screen. Fast forwarding through the battle, Karen paused the
film shortly ahead of the part she wanted to show to Rick. Running at normal
speed, the film showed what Karen meant.

Rick closely studied the screen. Indeed, he did see a trail like Karen had said. Or
did he just want to see a trail, want to see some prove that maybe, maybe Lisa
wasn't dead? He got close to the screen. The digital image was clear. "Can you
zoom in on this part?" Karen used the controlpanel to pick out the section Rick
indicated and enlarged it. Rick almost pressed his face into the screen. His eyes
pierced beyond the monitor. Did he see the cockpit flying away, or was it
a shadow?

"Sergeant, could you take a look at this?" Karen stepped over to Rick's side.
"Here." He pointed to a spot on the screen. Now Karen seemed to want to stick
her face into the screen. "What do you think?" The General looked at the young
Sergeant. "I think that is a cockpitmodule, General." The girl responded.

Max stepped away from the screen. He stroked his blue hair back. "Rick, you're
making it very difficult for me." Max started to think Rick was losing his grip
of reality. Again he studied the image. "I wonder, are those two just wishing to
see something, or not?" Max hoped he saw what Rick and Karen saw. "I... Well,
I can't say that I see a cockpit here."

Rick scratched his ear. "Sergeant Baker, get the computer to trace for any
definite shape in this segment." Karen typed in the commands. On the screen
lines formed, running around small bits of metal. Indicating dozens of pieces.
However, the large part also had an outline. "There is something." Karen
concluded.

"Rick, I know how much you love Lisa," Max tried to be as gentle as possible,
"but you've got to accept...." Rick looked at him, Max was surprised by the
determined, almost angry expression.

"She is not dead, Max!" Rick waved his hand. "Look at the screen!" Max did.
His eyes went over the larger outline. "What do you want me to do?"

"Get me an Alpha." Rick pleaded. "And then what?" Max couldn't figure what
Rick wanted to do. "You want to go and search the planet? If, I say if the
cockpit indeed was detached, it could have landed anywhere." Putting an arm
on Rick's shoulder. "Where are you going to look, Rick?" Max's best friend
stared at the screen. "I don't know. But I'll find her."

Karen looked at the two high ranking officers. "Sirs, I would like to volunteer
for a reconnaisance mission." Both men turned to look at Karen. "If they
survived, I can locate the cockpit's homing signal."

Rick faced Max. "It's your call." The Commander of the Skull Squadron looked
at Karen. Her eyes shone with hope. "All right. But you aren't going alone. We
will escort you."

"What a mess! I shouldn't complain anyway. This thing is what saved us.
Admiral, do you have any idea what to do next?" Jack's voice sounded low
because of the cramped cockpitmodule.

Lisa was surveying the open field. In the distance she could see some hills. "We
need to get away out of this field. There's nowhere we can hide. I suggest we
get to those hills. At least we can hide within those trees."

The pilot of the fallen shuttle emerged from the cockpit. "I've activated the
homing signal. Just hope someone comes to search for us."

Indeed, "someone" came to look for them. High in the sky, an Invid patrol
of Scouts detected activity on the ground. Focussing on the disturbance, one
Invid isolated two humanoid shapes. He signalled this to the leading craft.
Swiftly, they descended.

"This is all we can carry. Hope we get out of here before we.... Admiral, look !!" Jack screamed as he saw the incoming Scouts. Lisa turned and let out a
frightened cry. The canons lit, then rounds of laserfire came her way.

Jumping away, Jack hid behind the cockpit. "Get over here, Admiral!" He yelled,
while the ground exploded. Lisa fell, but quickly got up again, running to the
cockpit. "Keep down, Admiral." Jack released the safetycheck on the laser-rifle.

"Are you going to use that on those craft?" Lisa asked in disbelief. "Well,
Admiral, it's the best we have." Jack snapped back, irritated by Lisa's remark.
Aiming, he shouted. "Take this!" The shot bounced of the Scout's armour, and a
salvo left the cannons of the Invid's mecha.

"We're lucky those things are crap at aiming." Jack said as he kneeled again. The
lasers went over the cockpit. Earth was thrown up as the shots hit the surface.

By hiding behind the cockpit, Lisa and Jack made themselves undetectable for
the Invid sensors. Convinced they had eleminated the two humanoids, the Invid
patrol broke of their attack and returned to their original flightpath.

A face appeared carefully from beneath the cockpit. "Do you see them?" Lisa
asked. "Nope. I guess they think we're fried." Jack stepped away from the
module. "Admiral." He offered his hand to assist Lisa.

After collecting the equipment they needed, Jack and Lisa set out to reach the
hills and trees. "Hey, Admiral, maybe you didn't realize it yet, but we're the
first humans to set foot on a planet outside our own solar system. Guess we
have earned our place in history, don't you aggree?" Jack had a big smile on his
face.

The new leader of Gamma group was enjoying his lunch. Or trying to enjoy it.
Ever since his commanding officer and good friend Jack Baker was lost over Tirol,
Mike had been thinking what it was he was doing, risking his life. "Mind if I join
you?" A girl's voice asked. Mike's eyes moved up and he gestured Mary to take
a seat.

"Uhm, I don't think anything I can say will make it any easier, huh?" Mary put
her hand on Mike's. "You're here, that's already making it a bit easier, Mary." His
brown eyes followed the lines of Mary's face. Mary knew how close Mike and
Jack were. As close as brothers, someone had said to Mary.

Mike realized Mary was also hurting. Her aunt, Admiral Lisa Hayes was on the
shuttle. "Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot your aunt was on the shuttle."

Mary lowered her head. She fumbled a bit with her hands, then looked at Mike
with watery eyes. "She was all I had of family. And now she's gone. Now I'm
all alone." She covered her mouth with her hand. Mike got closer to Mary, and
whispered:"You're not alone. I'm here with you. Together, we will get through
this." He took her in his arms.

"Commander Wood, to the briefing room, Commander Wood, to the briefing
room." The intercom sounded emotionless. Mary sniffed, and wiped away
the tears. "There seems to be no time for me to sit and talk." Mary wanted to
walk away, but Mike took her hand. Looking into her eyes he said:"You can
depend on me, Mary, I'll be there for you." Mary gave Mike's hand a gentle
squeeze. "Thank you."

"Commander Wood, reporting." The girl in the white uniform saw the faces of
General Hunter, Commander Sterling and several other officers.

"Please be seated." Rick then addressed those present. "Based on footage from
Sergeant Penn's Alpha, we, that is me and Commander Sterling, have come to
the conclusion that it is possible that just before the shuttle carrying
Admiral Hayes exploded, pilot Baker has detached the cockpitmodule."

Mary couldn't beleive what she heard. She put her hands together, hoping it
wasn't a dream or sick joke. Rick continued. "Because of this we propose to send
a taskforce to Tirol, to scan an area were the cockpit might have come down. It
is hoped that the homing signal has been activated."

"Phew, well, here we are..." Jack put down the boxes with the equipment. Lisa
also dropped the bags she was carrying. The trees provided some shelter against
prying eyes. "Good, now, let's see. As far as I'm concerned, I don't think we can
expect any rescue party within one day. So, what to do next, Admiral?" Jack sat
down on one of the boxes. Leaning against a tree, her hands on her upperlegs, Lisa
panted because of the brisk walk.

Regaining her breath again, Lisa looked around. "The trees will hide us for those
Invid craft." "Invid?" Jack asked. "What's that?" Lisa raised her hands, showing
she didn't know. "As far as I've been told, the Invid are a race of aliens. It seems
they have taken control of this planet." Taking another deap breath of air. "But
that's all I know. Minister Exedore and Dr. Lang are working together now, to
see what we will do. It's clear our initial goal has failed. The whole mission has
failed."

Lisa sat down on the ground. Her uniform was smudged, as was Jack's. A rip
ran over her trousers. Some blood was visible, but it didn't seem to bother Lisa.

"Uh, yah." Jack broke the silence. "Admiral, I suggest we try and find some
shelter somewhere. Uhm, can you walk with that leg?"

"It doesn't hurt." She said. This whole situation reminded her of the time she
and Rick were held captive on Breetai's vessel. "Oh, Rick..." She whispered.
"Are you looking for us?"

At that moment, that same Rick heard his proposed plan to search for Lisa
be rejected. He didn't even recognize the face belonging to the voice that
shattered his hope, he didn't see anything. He only heard that voice turn
down the plan.

Max's blue eyes went over Rick's face. Disappointment was written all over
Rick's face. His mouth was a thin line, his eyes dim. As the other officers left
the room, Max noticed the First Officer sitting, quiet, staring at the floor. She
blinked her eyes.

"Max...." Rick sounded beat. "Notify the fleet that Admiral Hayes is missing."

"Missing...?" Max hesitated. "But we..."

"She is not dead!" The words came out of Rick's mouth one by one. His eyes
were dim no more. Something burnt in them. Something Max couldn't quite
classify. "She can't be dead."

"Yes, Sir." Max saluted, but he wasn't expecting a salute back. Rick folded his
arms and remained in his chair. The deep frown indicated Rick's mind was
somewhere else.

"General...?" The young girl looked at Rick, and he saw Mary Wood when he
looked up, Lisa's niece. "Could I talk with you, about Aunt Lisa?"

Rick gave a nod. A while later, they were at the home of Rick and Lisa, now
only Rick lived there. Rick offered Mary a drink, and poured in some whisky
for himself.

"Here's to Lisa." He said. Mary, a bit surprised, raised her glass. "General, do
you think we ever see Aunt Lisa again?" She took a sip of wine.

"You were at that meeting. There's nothing I can do. At least, not authorized."
Rick emptied his glass in one gulp. "See, me and Sergeant Penn are of the
opinion that there is a chance both the Admiral and Sergeant Baker survived."
Filling his glass again. "Problem is, I can't get clearance to go and send out a
search and rescue mission." Gulp, empty glass, refilling. "The only one who
seems to beleive us is Commander Sterling. But his hands are tied as well."

Mary looked at her glass, still three quarters filled. She knew Rick Hunter a bit.
Of course, since he and Lisa were married, Rick had become uncle Rick to Mary.
But the stress of the mission, the preparation and the proceedings so far had
prevented the two getting familiarized. Now, through a tragedy, they had the
opportunity to do so.

"General..." Mary started. Rick raised a finger. "Rick, please. Al this 'General'
stuff is getting on my nerves. Besides, we're family. Hmm?" He smiled, kind.
Mary smiled back. Her tension dropped, and she relaxed.

"What was aunt Lisa like at my age?" Mary put her glass on the table.

For a moment, Rick studied the young girl before him. He was no old man
himself, only thirty-two years, still in the boom of his life. Yet he had already
lived through events, a man wouldn't live through normally in an entire life. One
galactic war, held captive by aliens, the near total destruction of Earth, now he
was commanding a vessel hundreds of lightyears away from Earth.

He raised his eyebrows. "Well, I only learned to know Lisa when she was
twenty-four. I wasn't in the military then, just an amateur-pilot." Rick told Mary
about how he ended up in the war between Earth and the Zentraedi. How he
got to know Lisa Hayes. How the two were at each others throats at first. And
how he slowly started to feel things for Lisa.

"Strange. I never imagined myself falling in love with a person like Lisa. Till
then, I had been, well, sort of a ladies man. Lisa was totally different from any
girl I knew. Disciplined, seemingly devoid of any passion or romantic feelings.
One day, after the SDF-1 had been ordered to leave Earth again, we got trapped
during a transformation. As usual, we started bickering, blaming each other for
the situation we were in. But after a while and some talking, we seemed to, uhm,
we got closer to each other. I think, that's when I realized she was very special to
me. Not necessarily someone to love, but special, to care for. You know what I
mean?" Rick looked at Mary, who was listening very carefully.

"But when did you fall in love with her?" Mary asked, seeing how Rick was
being so open to her.

"I don't know. Such things happen so, so unnoticable. When Lisa left the SDF-1,
I felt miserable. Of course, I didn't confess I was, but it did hurt. After the attack
on Earth, we started to spend time together. She was a Commander by then, me
a Captain." Rick hesitated. "But there was someone else, another girl. I knew
her as long as I knew Lisa. Minmei's her name. She was my girlfriend on the
SDF-1. But we drifted apart. She had become a big star. I was a pilot. That didn't
fit. But being a big star had little meaning in a world, scarred by death and
destruction."

"I should have realized sooner how much Lisa cared for me. But I was blind to
see that. Oh sure, I heard rumors. I talked to the other bridge officers. But no
matter how much I thought of Lisa, I never saw her as someone to be in love,
especially with me. Until it was almost too late. During Christmas 2012, Minmei
had come to me, seeking a place to stay. She was all alone. I didn't mind her
staying over. Oh, and Lisa was mad at me at that time. The day before, I had
asked her out for a picnic. I didn't show up, had visited Minmei. And Lisa had
found out. She was furious, and I couldn't blame her."

"Anyway, Lisa was so upset, she wanted to leave the army, never see me again.
But Admiral Gloval convinced her to take command of the SDF-2. The day
before the departure, Lisa came to say goodbye. Typical, I had been thinking
of her ever since I last met her at the SDF-1. She told me she knew Minmei was
staying over at my place. But after that my mind was only thinking of Lisa. How
she would understand what I was doing, my work as a pilot, my dedication. How
we could spent our lives together, much better then I could with Minmei. Then
she came to say goodbye. My heart broke when she said she was leaving."

Rick bit on his lip. "Lisa told me that she was in love with me, but before I
could say anything, she ran away. All of a sudden, all around us the world burst
into flames. I ran after Lisa, scared she was injured, or worse. I found her. It was
then that I told her, that I was in love with her. For me to realize that, Lisa
nearly had to get killed."

Mary was intrigued. Rick sat looking at her. "You look so much like her. The
uniform, your face. Even on the bridge, you act the same."

Now it was Mary's turn to be open. "Yeah, well, Aunt Lisa is the only family
I had.... have. When my mother died, I was very young. I was three then. Aunt
Lisa already was in the service, and she couldn't take care of me. But she had
tried to have me placed under her custody, but she was too busy. Her career in
the army was taking up too much time. Also, she was only 19 years old then."

"After I grew up in a foster-home, when I was 17, I wrote a letter to Lisa, telling
her I wanted to see her again. We had been writing letters for years." Mary
sipped her glass of wine.

"I remember. Whenever she got a letter from you, she went to a private spot
to read it. Lisa always seemed to feel better after reading your letters." Rick said.

"Me too. I always enjoyed her kind words. Most of the people she commands
have no idea what a warm and gentle person Aunt Lisa is." Taking another sip.
"By that time, I knew Aunt Lisa had become a leader of the Defence Force. But
to my surprise she agreed to have me come over to her, on the Factory. That
moment, when I saw her again, I knew that was what I wanted to be, just like
Aunt Lisa. I was so proud to see her, to know what she stood for. So, that is
when I joined the Service."

"You are a very good officer, Mary." Rick took his glass, then put it back again.
"That's about enough, Hunter. Uhm, mind me saying so, but I hear you have
someone special as well, right?"

"Huh?" Mary's eyes went wide. "Uhm, yes. Uh. Why'd you ask?"

"Just curious." Rick sat back, closed his eyes, and slowly nodded. "Mind telling
me who he is?"

Mary hesitated. "Uhm, he's uh... Sergeant Fields. Mike Fields."

"Fields? Sounds familiar. Fields?" Rick thought. "Isn't he the one who shot down
seven Invid craft in our first encounter?"

"Yes, that's him. How'd you know?" Mary was surprised.

"What he did in that battle, and the one after that is remarkable to say the
least. There have been just 2 battles, but he shows great potential." Rick let out
a laugh. "Reminds me of Commander Sterling. He too shot down several enemy
craft in his first combat flight where others just sprayed space with laserfire."

"Thank you, Mary." Rick said, serious. Mary gave him a warm smile. "And
thank you, Gene... Uncle Rick." Rick smiled.

Two humans had been struggling through a forest area on Tirol. One woman
and one man, the only humans on an entire planet. On the run for the Invid.
Looking for shelter.

"Admiral, there's a cave entrance just a couple of meters from here. I think that
is a very good place to spend the night." Jack said.

Lisa looked at him, surprised, questioning what he just said. Jack stammered. "I
mean... We could sleep there together... Uhm, seperate... You know what I
mean."

"Yes, but just to be sure." Lisa joked.

After a short end climbing and clambering, they reached the cave Jack was
talking about. "Just hope the rent isn't too much." Jack went in. "Oh no! Oh
my God!"

"What?!" Lisa yelled after him.

"There's no fridge!" Jack replied, then starting to laugh.

"This man is unbeleivable." Lisa thought, she stepped into the cave where Jack
had lit a torch. The light made the cave look eerie.

Staying close together, Lisa and Jack penetrated deeper and deeper into the
cave. Jack held the torch above and his eyes pierced deep into the darkness that
was in front of them.

"Yaaa..." Jack stumbled over a rock, tripped and fell face down on the floor.
The light of the torch went dead.

"Oh great. Now we can't see a thing anymore!" Lisa shouted to the fallen
Sergeant.

"Uh, Admiral, I don't know if I'm seeing things or not, but uhm, the floor has
opened here." Jack crawled back up again.

"What is that?" Lisa wondered as she peered into the hole in the ground.

"Beats me. Are we going to stay here, or get down there?" Jack pointed at
the low lit opening.

"Huh? Do you have any idea what's down there? It could just as well be a trap."

"We'll find out when it is sprung on us!" And Jack lowered himself through the
hole.

"Sergeant, you get back here this instant! You hear me?! Sergeant!!" Lisa got
worried as seconds passed without a word back from the adventurous Sergeant.

"Nope. No trap here, Admiral." Jack said triumphantly. "As a matter of fact,
this here looks pretty darn interesting."

"I'm going to be very sorry later for doing this." Lisa thought as she tried to
get through the hole.

"Here. Let me help you." Jack wanted to assist Lisa, but then she dropped to
the floor and he cought her in his arms, his hands resting on her breasts.
"Aaah...." He exclaimed.

He immediately let go of her, his face turning as red as it had never been before.
"I... I'm very sorry, I didn't mean to, it wasn't my intention to do this." He
stuttered.

"Oooh, you'd better know for sure this wasn't your intention, Sergeant!" Lisa
shouted, her face too turned completely red.

"I said I am sorry." Jack looked at Lisa with a shy face. Lisa still covered her
bosom, feeling ashamed. "Hmmph."

"Now, are we going to sit here feeling foolish and such, or are we going to see
where these here tunnels lead to?" Jack searched for a way out of the very
awkward situation.

"You're right, let's go." Lisa let her guard go.

Taking the lead, Jack walked from tunnel to tunnel, then turning right, and then
left, then right again. "Do you have any idea where we are going?" Lisa asked,
feeling as if Jack was leading them around in circles.

"Now look here, a compass won't work since we have no clue what north and
south is on this planet. Given there is a north and south." Jack stopped in front
of a fork in the road. Putting up a cool face, Jack said:"Well, here we are. I
know what you're thinking: Did he go left? Or did he go right? Now, the
question is: Do you feel lucky today? Huh, punk?"

"What are you babbling about?" Lisa said, amazed at the actions of
the young man.

"Oh, it's an old movie I saw on the SDF-3. Funny. One of those old classic
ones, you know." Jack's eyes went from left to right and back. "Door number
one, or door number two?"

"What? I couldn't hear." Lisa got closer to Jack.

"Number two it is!" Jack said jubilantly. "Just follow me, Admiral."

"I hear something." Rem's remark silenced the crowd. Everybody listened
sharply.

"Is it Invid?" Cabell whispered.

"Don't know. I can't hear it very good." Rem moved closer to the opening in the
wall. "There seem to be two."

Several men also got closer to the opening, weapons ready. As soon as the
intruder showed it's face, they would jump it.

"And anyway, what are we going to do if we can't get back to the SDF-3?  Just
sit down here and grow old, raise kids?" Jack surveyed the walls of the
tunnel they were passing through. "Hey, there's a light!"

Jack rushed to the small beam of light. He stopped short in front of
the opening, waving Lisa to get closer. "Admiral, I could be mistaken, but I
think I hear something in there."

"Well, what is it?" Lisa asked, heart pounding, getting closer and closer
to Jack.

Jack took the laserrifle, ready to take whatever was behind the opening. "You
wait here, Admiral."

Cautiously, Jack moved closer and closer to the opening, he could feel wind
blowing out of it. The sounds he heard kept getting clearer and louder. His
trembling finger released the safetycatch.

"Be carefull, if it's the Invid, we need to get out of here as quick as we can."
Rem's eyes were fixed on the breach in the wall. Behind him, some ten Tirolians
were waiting, weapons ready.

His face turned moist of sweating, Jack looked up to the ceiling of the cave,
hoping some greater power delivered him some steel nerves. He closed his eyes
for a short moment, then stepped into the light. "Hah, gotcha..... Ooomph!"
Then the sound of a moaning body falling on the ground.

Lisa uttered a cry of fear, then quickly silenced herself by putting a hand
on her mouth. Trying to hide, Lisa pushed herself as far as she could against the
wall of the tunnel. There was no way she could get away unnoticed.
