THE DEATH GUARD
One word of warning: if you don't know much about the Warhammer 40,000 game, you'll probably be a little confused about what is to come.

The Death Guard is one of the Chaos Space Marine Legions, traitor super-soldiers of the 41st millenium, hellbent on destroying the Imperium of Man and replacing it with one ruled by the Dark Powers of the Chaos Gods.

Like all the Chaos Marine Legions, the Death Guard were once a loyal Marine Legion of the First Founding, serving humanity as some of its finest warriors.  However, during a trip through warpspace (a "sub-universe" through which one can travel great distances faster than one can in real-space), the Death Guard fell ill with a horrible plague: their bellies distended and split, spilling diseased innards onto the floor, while tumors and buboes oozed sickening slime.  Each of the Death Guard starships in turn contracted the sickness and Mortarion, the supreme commander, lord and Primarch of the Legion, prayed to the Chaos power Nurgle, the All-Father, god of disease and decay, for salvation.  In doing so, Mortarion damned his fellow Space Marines of the Death Guard Legion.  Thus were born the Plague Marines: carriers of disease and sickness.  Mortarion eventually arose as a Daemon Prince, and, to this day, the surviving Plague Marines continue to spread illness in the name of All-Father Nurgle.

WHY CHOOSE THE DEATH GUARD?
The simple answer to that is, "Why not?"  However, it goes a little deeper than that.  Nurgle-worshippers tend to be physically and mentally tougher than other followers of chaos.  Plague Marines never break from combat and are never pinned down by enemy fire.  Furthermore, those with the Mark of Nurgle receive a +1 bonus to their Toughness, allowing them to shrug off wounds that would kill a normal an already-tougher Space Marine.  Another reason is speed: Plague Marines, being diseased and rotting, can afford to look unclean, so somewhat rushed paint jobs, with small mistakes, can be overlooked or quickly fixed.

CHANGES TO THESE PAGES (12/24/01)
With the rules in the Index Astartes in White Dwarf issue 264 released in December 2001, I decided to make the entire army Death Guard.  While this means that certain troop types cannot be applied to the Death Guard ("plain" Chaos Space Marine squads, Obliterators, Bike Squads, Veterans, Raptors, etc.) or requires slight modifications (Death Guard Havocs), I felt that giving the entire army a single deity to worship would be easier in the long run, and to give the army a unity it would lack otherwise.

This also means that Noise Marines, Berzerkers, and Thousand Sons, being loyal to the other three Powers (Slaanesh, Khorne, and Tzeentch, respectively), and will be not be present at all.  This is all fine with me... it means less things for me to paint.

I still plan on adding a page of alternate army commanders.  They will all be from the Death Guard, though each will be a unique entity (Daemon Prince, Sorcerer Lord, etc.).

Once squads, characters and vehicles are complete, I plan on photographing them, scanning the photos and uploading them (if I can find a place that scans photos, that is).  I am a bit of a conversion-freak (at one point, I couldn't go a week without cutting some miniature's head or arm off), so one can expect to see a lot in that department.  I have also scratch built two Dreadnaughts, and intend on painting them both up, even though only one will likely being showing up in the army at any one time.

I'd like to stress that at no point in these pages do I say that my choices are the best for games, or that what I have chosen is unbeatable.  I tend to think that no army is unbeatable, and my choices in troops are mine alone, and another person may have better luck with a different/larger mix.

That being said...
CONTENTS:
DEATH GUARD PAGE 1
A Chaos Marine force drawn completely from the Death Guard Chapter, using the Codex: Chaos Space Marines and the modifications found in White Dwarf issue 264 (January 2002).  (THIS PAGE IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND MAY BE MODIFIED WITHOUT WARNING.)

THE ORIGINAL (NURGLE-CENTRIC) CHAOS MARINE ARMY
The 2,050 point army of Chaos Space Marines using the format of the Codex: Chaos Space Marines.  Note that while I have discontinued this army list for a modified one, I am keeping this around as it is still a perfectly legal army to use, and can be used as a "jumping off point" for those who wish to use it.

ABOUT SPAWN73
A brief look at the the person responsible for these pages.  Maybe it'll answer a few questions you have... like "Do you really refer to yourself as 'Spawn73?'"

BIG HONKIN' PAGE O' LINKS
Simply here because every webpage seems to have one.  It's a page... a page of links.  But you probably already guessed that.  Links for Games Workshop, Warhammer 40K, and other stuff.
