Time passes in moments ...
"Time passes in moments. Moments which, rushing past us, define a path of a life, even
as they fix upon its end. How rarely do we stop to examine that path. To see the reasons
why all things happen. To consider whether the path we have taken is of our own making,
or one into which we have simply drifted with our eyes closed. But what if we were to
stop? To take stock of each precious moment before it passes. May we see the endless
forks in the roads that shape our lives? And seeing the choices we've made, choose
another path?”
For the past few episodes, Scully has shown signs of being unhappy with her life,
and where her decisions have led her. However, in “all things,” Scully runs into an old
lover from her past, and because of a series of coincidences thereafter, Scully realizes that
she is doing what is right, and heading down the correct path ....
In one of the first scenes, we are witness to Scully’s displeasure at the outlook of
her life. Mulder confronts her with yet another case that looks at “unexplained
phenomena” and Scully, to say the least, is not pleased. I must say that I would feel the
same way as Scully if I were in her position. Why do we have to "go chasing after the
next big thing?" as she put it. We all do it. It's human nature. We really do need to slow
down and "take stock of all moments," as Scully says in the first scene.
I love Gillian Anderson more now than I did before, and I never thought that was
possible. I can't believe her talents: superb actress, writer and director.
Her direction was first rate, with the slow motion takes, the lighting effects, the
music, the auditory pleasures. It really makes the viewer pay attention.
As always, Gillian’s acting was superb as well. Her scenes with Daniel were
breathtaking. "I want what every woman wants at this time in her life. Maybe I want the
path I didn't choose." The scene when Daniel tells her that he stayed in DC for her, I was
so incredibly moved by Gillian's performance. It doesn't get any more real than that. It
was interesting to see Scully in a new light, being so intimate with someone else other
than Mulder. She became more feminine, more vulnerable, than we have seen.
Colleen was a very refreshing character as well, she was able to bring other new
aspects of Scully’s personality to light, and help Scully realize to slow down, and let go of
her guilt and shame.
I'd have to say that my favorite sequence of this episode would be when Scully is
walking out of the hospital with the red roses to the beat of the music. I could almost hear
what was going on through her head; about everything that Colleen had said, that never
ending battle within herself of whether or not she made the right choice. Than we see
Scully run after the blonde woman from the near accident and go into the temple.
I am not sure about the blonde woman. I think that the blonde woman symbolized
Mulder, and how he is always with her every step of the way. Or could the woman be a
symbol of fate itself? How we are always trying to find the right path?
I thought the "Speak To Me" segments were also very important. We first hear it
when Scully is on the cell phone with Mulder and had the near car accident: "Speak to
me, Scully." Then, we hear, or rather see "Speak to me." again in Scully's two dream
sequences. The fact is, that is one of the main themes of this episode: Scully speaking to
herself, finding out who she really was, Scully speaking to others to let them know how
she really felt. However, Scully’s the experience in the temple was the strongest example
of the “Speak to me” metaphor. God was speaking to Scully, therefore, letting her speak
to herself.
In the last scene at Mulder’s apartment, Scully comments, “What I would have
missed." Oh yes indeed. I have been sad for a lack of a better word to see Scully shying
away from Mulder, being cold and closing herself up in the past few episodes, and it
seems to me, that this experience that Scully had has allowed herself to "warm up" and
open herself up to Mulder again. They really had a heartfelt conversation, and it was so
nice to see them act so comfortable around each other, with scully's bare feet on the
coffee table, sitting so close on the couch. When Mulder pulled the blanket over Scully,
and tucked her hair behind her ear, I was sure he was going to kiss her. But I really wasn't
all that disappointed when he didn't, because that look on his face; pure tenderness was to
die for.
All romantic antics aside, this episode was worth dying for. This is why I watch
the show: to find out about the characters and myself. Anyone could relate to this show. It
dealt with life; the things we all worry about: if we have made the right choices, the role
of coincidence in our lives, how big of a part we really play in our own fate. I am always
relieved to find out I am not the only one who worries. Thank you Gillian Anderson, for
this beautiful gift to humanity.
