A poor orphaned boy named En Sabah Nur was found by King Ramsey in the deserts of Egypt, roughly 2000 years ago, and was turned into a slave. This boy found out that he had some really cool powers, and fancied himself a god. He coined the motto "Survival of the fittest" and deemed himself and those like him to be the only ones worthy of survival. Everyone else was stupid and expendable. He impressioned King Ramsey and turned him into a blind living statue to record history, naming him Ozymandias. Like the song. Only the song didn't come out until the 1980's, and Apocalypse sued for copyright infring... oh, wait... i'm getting ahead of myself...
Anyway, Apocalypse soon realized that he was only a mutant, and there were other such mutants. Around the age of Victorian England, he came across a Doctor named Nathaniel Essex, and augumented his hidden latant mutant abilities so there could be more "strong" mutants to fight by his side. Apocalypse decided to wait for evolution to create more mutants, and stayed hidden for another hundred or so years...
When human hatred of mutants was at an all time high, Apocalypse made his move. He continualy chalanged X-Factor (Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman and the newly-revived Jean Grey), and after the Mutant Massacre, he captured Angel who had lost his wings and attempting to commit suicide and turned him into the Archangel, the Fourth legendary horseman of the Apocalypse, also named Death. He used Archangel along with the other horsemen (Pestilence, War, and Famine) to kick around X-Factor a few more times. After Warren rejoined his teamates, Apocalypse stuck back by giving Cyclops's son, Nathan, the Techno Organic Virus, forcing Cyclops to send the child 2000 years into the future for treatment. X-Factor confronted Apocalypse on the Moon, and kicked the big "A"'s "A". Apocalypse went into submission to regenerate.
Apocalypse continued to rear his ugly head, only to be thwarted by the X-Men and X-Factor, and eventualy, Cable. Speaking of Cable, he was raised in a future where Apocalypse reigned supreme. Cable is now out and gunning to defeat Apocalypse, who's responsible for his personal past, which would mean that Cable wouldn't exsist.... oh boy. Good thing Apocalypse is immortal... Or is that a bad thing? AAH! Anyway, Apocalypse, for all his power, can't seem to do anything. He's too behind the scenes. The most active role he's taken lately is "helping" in the fight against Onslaught.
Interestingly enough, in an alternate reality where Xavier died before he could form the X-Men, Apocalypse was able to rule the world, see The Age of Apocalypse for details. And it is believed he may become a victim of the Legacy Virus as well...
