Hi. This page is for information and links about Chicago and it's Suburbs ghost stories. Many of the stories here are paraphrased from the book " Chicago Haunts: Ghostly Lore of the Windy City," by Ursula Bielski. The book can be obtained from Lake Claremont Press LakeClarPr@aol.com Some of these links lead to information on other sites. Two other sources for my material are Ghost of the Prarie Web Page Graveyards of Chicago and some of the places can be found in Dennis Hauck's "Haunted Places." Lots of the places listed below are open to the public. Please check back for updates. You can email me your own stories to ghostlly@yahoo.com
Chicago's Gangsterland Ghost Stories Page:
In Waukegan in 1922 Mrs. Milkovich reported something raiding her pantry every monday night and spreading coal and flour all over the kitchen after her husband passed away. The minister came assisted by 2 local men. No one saw a thing, but one of the men lost his pistol never to be found again. Another man came to the house and sat vigil. He tried to light his pipe and everytime he lit a match something would blow it out. Then something grabbed his arm causing him to drop his pipe. He claimed to have seen a shadow on the wall. That was the last event that happend in the house.
Milakovich House
The John Glessner House
The Glessner house still stands today as a monument to the architect that designed it Henry Richardson. The house was built on 1800 Prarie Avenue. It was the next to the last house he built. It is built in a Romanesque style of stone. Richardson loved the house so much he stayed on after death to haunt it. Over the years inhabitants of the home have identified Richardson as the spirit haunting their home. Also phantom horses are heard galloping down Prarie Avenue.
Built to resemble an Irish castle. This site is haunted by a female spirit. Possibly of either Robert Givens wife who died before her husband could complete the castle, or a young college student who died there from influenza. Sometimes a woman in a long dress can be seen on the stairs here. Visitors to the castle experience strange sounds like a jingling sound. Occasionally a candle light can be seen to float by a window and up the stairs when no one is there. The Beverly Unitarian Church uses the Irish Castle as a meeting place. The Castle is located at 103rd street and Longwood Drive in Chicago.
When this 100th scale reproduction of a pyramid was built strange things began to happen. During digging the foundation they hit a vein of rich gold ore. It was the only gold strike in the history of Illinois. Then a very pure spring bubbled up out of the ground forming a natural moat around the pyramid. The water was so pure that it was allowed to be bottled and sold. Then strange jellyfish like creatures appeared in the moat around the pyramid. After they appeared a flock of ravens appeared and started to eat them. Anyone using the north entrance of the pyramid was attacked by the birds. The original pyramid in Egypt was supposed to be gaurded by similar birds at it's north entrance. Located at 37921 Dilleys Road in wadsworth.
Im not aware of any haunting associated with this cemetery, but It would not suprise me. A helicopter crashed on this cemetery in 1960 killing 13 unlucky people where the chapel is now located. There is a monument here to the ancient order of the druids. With graves aranged in circles around it. There is an intersting brick road that runs down mausoleum row and a monument to the Haymaker Martyrs. Four inocent people were hung because of a labor dispute demostration related bombing.
In the early 1970's Two teachers and a student witnessed a fog come out of the library about 3 feet off the floor. It passed between the teachers. Then it went to the stairs and climbed the stairs while turning a corner. The student claimed to see the ghost of Horace Greely. Since then books have fallen of the shelves by themselves. Objects sometimes disapear only to reapear later in the same spot.
The ghost of native americans are seen here. Ghost lights are reported and strange sounds.
Located in Highland Park this fort has many documented hauntings. Some rooms are bricked off because of all the strange happenings. The water tower is said to be particularly haunted by the ghost of a woman who died there.
The building that is now the Red Lion Pub was a bookmaker's joint in the 1940's. Patrons of this bar report ghostly noises, footsteps, and voices. Sometimes customers find themselves locked in the bathroom upstairs. The Red Lion is located at 1610 North Wells Street. There are several spirits here. It is argued wether the female spirit is that of a flapper who was killed upstairs or a young retarded girl named Sharon. A ghost of a young cowboy and a blonde slavic man have been reportedly seen. Also the presence of a previous owners father.
This old steak house was since boarded up. There were many reports of it being haunted. One waitress reported being physically dragged to the edje of the stairs on the upper floor by a malicious entity. A bartender once ended up face-to-face with a pair of glowing disembodied yellow eyes. At the turn of the century there were 2 unsolved murders in Pipers Alley beside the building. Also see That Steak Joynt.
The upstairs of this resturaunt is haunted by a distraught woman who died nearby in a car accident after an argument with the bartender. Many employees have reported ghostly encounters. Lights flicker on and off by themselves, and there is poultergeist type activity. Doors slam by themselves. Thermostats behave strangely. Shutters open by themselves. People hear strange voices. Many hear footsteps on the stairs. The presence of a woman and a child lingers upstairs. The cleaning crew sometimes hears crying.
My investigation Results
