Lister
|
David Lister was abandoned as a baby, found in a cardboard box under a pool table in a pub. He was adopted but his adoptive-father died.
He took maintenance job on "Red Dwarf" to to save up money to buy himself a little farm on Fiji, where he could get a sheep and a cow, and breed horses. Unfortunately the ship's drive plant exploded, and killed everyone else aboard.
Now he's lost in space with Rimmer, Cat, Holly, Kryten and Kochanski.
Lister is the mother of two twin boys, but because of the shifts in the laws of time and space (or whatever), he had to send them back to the parallel universe where they were conceived.

Rimmer
|
Arnold Judas Rimmer was born on one of Jupiter's moons, didn't get along with his parents as a child. He has failed the engineering-exam 11 times.
Along with the rest of the crew he died when the ship's drive plant exploded, he's at the moment "living" as a hologram generated by Holly.
He is disciplined, organized and completely dedicated to his career.

Cat
|
The Cat is the last of the Felis Sapiens, 'breed from the domestic cat and about half as smart'. Looking good, eating and sleeping is the only things in the world he cares about.

|
Kryten
|
Kryten 2X4B 523P is a Series 4000 Mechanoid. He was found by the crew in another runaway spaceship (where the entire female crew had been dead for ages, without Kryten even noticing).
He is programmed to respect and obey all humans (no matter how insane). He has been taught by Lister to rebel and lie by showing him such films as "Rebel Without A Cause" and "Casablanca".

Holly
Kochanski
|
Kristine Kochanski is from a parallel universe, where she survived the accident in stead of Lister.
She likes her Lister, cottage cheese with pineapple-chunks, and she leaves the salad-dressing on the shelf and not in the refrigerator where it's supposed to be.
