Ro'lana sat bolt upright in bed
panting and surrounded by sweat soaked sheets in a dark
room,
it was all a dream, that was all it was, just a dream. She looked through the
dark into the
direction
of the door as she heard muffled foot steps walk by the corridor beyond. She
reached
over
and turned the rooms lights on low and
instinctively brought one of her hands up to shield
her
eyes from the sudden change of light till they adjusted. She picked up her
chrono and made a
note
that it was still early morning. Picking up the simple brown jumpsuit she had
been given
and
quickly put it on and headed out the door and down the hall towards the medical
ward.
Dr.
Riswok cursed to herself as Ro'lana walked into the medical ward and glanced
over at the
empty
bed "Where is Jackbur?". The doctor turned to look at her
"Lt.Goreran and his security
officers
came and took him for questioning, against my explicit instructions not to move
him.
His wounds
are not yet completely healed, he is just about to due for his bacta wrap
changed"
Ro'lana
bit her lower lip as she thought back to her dream.
Three hours later Ro'lana was
sitting out side General Ma'cambo office. The secretarial
droid led
her inside after she had sat waiting for about twenty-five minutes. As she
walked
inside
the office she noticed it did not look anything like the ferrocrete windowless
one in her
dream,
in fact this one seemed fairly lush. Off to her right as she entered the room
was a small
briefing
table with about eight or ten chairs around it. On the left was what appeared
to be real
wooden
shelves with stacks of data card boxes. Right behind the general's desk was a
transparasteel
window that covered the whole wall. Out the window she could see a mountain
range
off in the distance and a green carpet of local biba trees.
The general stood up and leaned
across his desk and shook her hand lightly "It is a
pleasure
to meet you, Ms. Ro'lana. Quite some job getting that wounded man through the
amount
of forest you did till our search parties found you. Any how, what can I do for
you?" he
said
smiling lightly.
"Well it is about the man
that came in with me, Jackbur, I would like to know why he is
being
interrogated, I mean he has not done anything wrong in fact he saved my own
life." She
said
sitting down in one of the two chairs he gestured to on the opposite side of
the desk. "I
assure
you he is quite all right. This is standard operating procedure." He said
as she frowned at
him
"The first part is by suddenly taking him into custody we can sometimes
spook out possible
spies,
such as if he tried to run or became real fidgety as if he was trying to hide
something.
Then we
take his statement and correlate it to some of our data" he finished and
she straightened
slightly
in her chair which she found to be quit stiff and some what uncomfortable
"and what
have
your correlations found?" he leaned back slightly and Ro'lana saw some
kind of fowl fly by
the
window behind him
"We are still waiting on
certain aspects to be confirmed by some of our field agents."
Bringing
her attention from the window back to him she looked him in the eyes "And
why is it
that
you did not subject me to any of this?"
He leaned back ever so slightly
more and interlocked his fingers in front of him "Quite
simple
Ms. Ro'lana, we have been expecting you"...

The
guard closed the door to the interrogation room, leaving Jackbur alone. Three hours of
intensive
interrogation by Bothans and Shistavanens had left him drained. His side ached,
throbbed. He wished he were back in the infirmary, in
the bacta tank. He laughed at that
thought,
wishing to be in a bacta tank, of all places!
His thoughts drifted back over the last few
days,
from the garrison on Tatooine to the Rebel outpost on.....where was he?
Dantooine? Yes,
Dantooine,
that was what Ro'lana had said before he blacked out in the escape pod. He was on
Dantooine
with Ro'lana. Warm memories of a near forgotten dream washed over him: Ro'lana,
beautiful
Ro'lana..... He sat up straight with a jerk.
Ro'lana!? Was he falling for her?
Hold on a
minute
there Lt., he told himself. She's a
Twi'lek, remember? You know about
Twi'lek
females
and their effect on men, you learned all about that in basic training, remember
the
holostrips
about troopers on leave in strange places, what a young man away from home for
the
first
time needs to watch out for. Ya, and
those Twi'lek females were high on the list of dangers
weren't
they, bucko! They were reputed to have
much the same effect on humanoid males as the
Feleen
had on females of dozens of humanoid species.
"Watch out for them exotic alien
woman"
Sargent Hansin had said, "They prey on young unsuspecting boys like youse
guys,
Them
aliens is all alike, none of'ems human, even the ones what looks human"
Wait a minute,
Jackbur
thought, that attitude is one of the reasons I left the Tatooine garrison. Sgt. Hansin's
next
words flood, unbidden, into his mind
"And watch out fer them local gals, too. They'd like
notin'
better then ta get their hooks inta some guy with a future, they're just as
sneaky as them
aliens,
and just about as far beneath an Imperial Trooper too, So stay away from the
jail bait that
hangs
around the camps. And watch out for the
local gov'ner's daughter too. All them
provincials
want to get an officer...' And that
Jackbur thought, was the OTHER reason he'd left
Tatooine.......

Ro'lana stared at the general in shock.
"How did you know I was coming? I didn't tell
anyone!"
"Captain, you are a highly valued
member of the Alliance. How would we have NOT
known?"
"I'm not part of the
Alliance! I came here to join it, though"
"Captain, if you don't
remember, I advise you to have the medics check you out."
"Fine, I'll go see
them."

Taggart Date: 10-10-1998 03:23
"But first what do you mean by
'valued member of the Alliance'?" she said across the desk
at him
somewhat perplexed by the sudden events
"Well Captain you and your
ship and crew have run a number of key supply runs for the
Rebellion,
in fact you were on one about four
weeks ago hauling some VERY important cargo
when we
received a faint distress signal from your ship and that was it. We have failed
to find
any
trace of your ship, our cargo, or even yourself and crew for that matter, till
now," leaning
back
forward the General put both hands, still interlocked, upon the top of his desk
and leaned
forward
ever so slightly, "Tell me Captain, WHAT DID happen?"
Completely taken back by what he
just said, Ro'lana replied, "I,- I, don't
know, I can't
even
remember the events you described."
He frowned over at her "What
is the earliest thing you remember from the past few
weeks?"
She furrowed her brow for a
second as she thought back "walking down the streets of
Mos
Eisley just a couple days ago"
"And how is it you arrived
there?"
She looked at him skeptically
"Well in a ship of course!"
"What ship?"
"MY ship!"
He picked up a data pad off his desk and punched in a few
items "Funny, we have
no
records of any ship landing in Mos Eisley in the past few weeks that even comes
close to
matching
your ship. Are you positive?"
She thought back, thought back hard
and was taken back by the fact that she wasn't sure,
she
wasn't positive of just how she got there "No, I am not, I am not sure of
anything anymore,
all I
knew was that I had to get back to the rebellion." He looked at her and
could read the loss
and
frustration in her face...

"....Far away from Dantooine, a female Rodian in a long, dark cloak
hurried silently into a
small
building. 'Another day, another kill,' she thought to herself with a slight
shudder. She knew
it
seemed a cold, harsh statement, but
that was what her life had become...and she was good at
it.
She was even beginning to make a name for
herself among certain circles...Cheeram the
Assassin.
She cautiously looked around for the man she was supposed to meet there, her
blaster
at the
ready. For a moment she thought he was late, but then a tall, dark figure
stepped out of the
shadows.
His cold voice asked, "Were you successful?" Cheeram nodded, hoping
she would
never
have to face Bortes after a failure..."

"Look," said Ro'lana, "I
am very tired and I can't remember the events you are talking
about.
I'm sorry but please let me go and I will think about what you have said."
"Look," exclaimed the General, "I'll let you
go back, but I want you here tomorrow
morning
at 0800 hours, sharp! We really need to know what happened" he leaned
forward,
"Maybe
we could discuss it over dinner sometime,"
"Thanks but no thanks
General," exclaimed the shocked Ro'lana...
She ran out of the room without saying
good bye. She ran straight to her room and
collapsed
on her bed. She was so tired. She felt so drowsy and lay down and once her head
hit
the
pillow, drifted off to a dreamless sleep. She woke up, but she closed her eyes
again because
of the
blinding light and she screamed as she felt a hand on her arm...

: ... Coming fully alert after
being grabbed Ro'lana looked up into the face of Dr. Riswok.
"Doctor
Riswok, what are you doing here?" asked Ro'lana as she wiped away the last
lingering
sleepiness.
"I have come to tell you that your
friend Jackbur has gone into a coma.
Because Lt.
Goreran
had him in interrogation room for so long and Jackbur missed having his Bacta
Bandages
changed," began Dr. Riswok, "a rare type of bacteria infection has
caused him to go
into a
coma. We are doing everything we can for him. I just thought you would like to
know. I
am
sorry for disturbing you," said Dr. Riswok as she began to leave.
"Wait for me Doctor, I will come
with you to Med Bay," said Ro'lana as she slipped on
her
boots.
Just as Dr. Riswok and
Ro'lana enter Med Bay, one of the nurses called out "Code
Blue,
in room 3", Jackbur's room number.
"What is the matter!?" demanded
Dr. Riswok as she entered Jackbur's room.
"Patient is in Cardiac Arrest,"
said the nurse.
"Are we going to lose him Dr.
Riswok?" asked Ro'lana from the doorway....

... that is when she noticed that he
was not the only one in the room. In the bed next to him
was
what looked to be a short heavy set man with grey thinning hair on the top of
his head. She
let out
a sign of relief as a voice sounded behind her "ms please get out of the
way." As she
turned
around and stepped to the side of the doorway,
a nurse quickly rushed by pushing a cart
full of
medical equipment. As the nurse past she peered back into the room to see the
doctor
issuing
orders.
"I want 10cc of cario'utin, Carm,
hook the fib electrodes up and bring the charge up to
two-thirds."
"Yes doctor," one of the
nurses said while another one took out a hypo and injected it into
the man
on the bed.
"Ready doctor."
"All right, CLEAR!"
Ro'lana watched as the man's whole
body convulsed in time with the shock and
extremities
flying every which way
"No response doctor."
"All right 20cc of neuctone!"
"But doctor.."
"DO IT! NOW!"
"Yes doctor," the nurse
said, picking up a different hypo, changing an adjustment on it
and
injecting it into the man.
"All right prepare to fib
again, CLEAR!" The man's body convulsed again only this time
one of
the machines in the background started beeping rhythmically. The doctor let out
a sigh,
"All
right, give him 3cc of aulicon every hour for the next three hours. Keep him on
the
ventilator
for now and monitor his stats regularly."
"Yes doctor" the chorus
of nurses responded.
She then stepped out of the room
into the hallway and saw Ro'lana standing there. "Just
a
moment more please," she said pulling a comlink out of the medical coat
she was wearing.
She
spoke into it, "What is the current status on our shipment of medical
supplies?"
From the comlink came a voice, Ro'lana
could not determine the type of speaker on the
other
end. "The one with the standard Bacta tank doctor?"
"Yes that is the one."she
said back into it.
"Last check in had them at an
ETA of five and a half standard hours."
"Ok, thanks," she said
back into it, shutting it off and sliding it back into her coat. She
leaned
up against the wall letting out a sigh of relief, pulling some strands of hair
out of her face
and
tucking them behind her ears. Ro'lana stepped up next to her and she turned to
look at her
"Oh yes, terribly sorry, you were
wanting to know about your friend, right"
"Please." Ro'lana said.
"Well the initial reports
seemed very strange so I am currently having the medical droid
run a
toxicology scan on a sample of his blood, but as you can see, we don't have
much in the
way of
medical equipment. That is what that
transport I was talking about over the com is
brining
in. Do not worry we will make sure he gets good attention."...

"...Dr. Jaynoel Riswok sat down in
her office with a sigh...it was good to get off her feet for a
change
She almost never had the time to just sit in her office.....but now, with the
patients
stabilized,
and the medical supplies en route, there was not much she could do but wait.
Still, it
was
impossible to relax....sitting gave her time to think....and in her situation,
thinking could be
depressing.
The outlook was not good for the patients in her ward, nor was it good for the
entire
Rebel
effort. Dr. Riswok looked up to see her friend and colleague, Dr. Davies, enter
her office.
"Jay, I have some bad news..."
he began, "No, don't stand up! I think you'll want to be sitting
down
for this..." Fear gripped Dr. Riswok's chest, and her throat suddenly went
dry. Dr. Davies
pulled
another chair up next to hers and sat down.
"Tom, what...?" she began,
but her voice cracked. She could see the pain in his eyes as he
placed
a hand on her arm.
"Jay, I'm very sorry that I
have to tell you this. I just received word: Your brother was
murdered."
For a moment Dr.Riswok just sat
there...'No,' she thought to herself, 'there has to be some
mistake.....Ben
has always been there to lend an ear or give me moral support...he convinced me
to join
the rebel effort in the first place...he can't be gone.....' Tears welled in
the corners of her
eyes.
Dr. Tom Davies waited. Finally
she spoke. "Killed...why? By whom?"
"Well, they're not sure, but
they believe it was because of his rebel connections. His
assassin
has not been captured, but they have a witness who said he was killed by a
Rodian."......."

"Excuse me for interrupting, Dr. Riswok and Davies, but this is the

...sitting
back in her chair and examining the report Dr. Riswok studied it very closely,
then read
through
it a second time to make sure it was right, "Well this is
interesting." Ro'lana, sitting in
a
chair
across from the doctor's desk, the only one that did not have datacards or
medical supplies,
she
looked at the pad and then up to the doctor.
"What have you discovered?"setting
the data pad down the doctor glanced over at her
"Well, it appears that
there are minute traces of a very rare substance in Jackbur's
blood.
It is from the Charita' system, the natives used it as a form of capital
punishment. It would
induce
a coma and if the criminal came out of it then they were deemed forgiven for
their
crimes."
Ro'lana looked back at her
"Well, is there any cure?"
"Well, as I said it was used as
punishment so they never bothered to try to make one, at
least
not that I know of, and the plant it is made from is extemely rare, and there
was no
evidence
of it when I ran the last set of tests, which was just after his last bacta
treatment." The
doctor
leaned back and sighed. " I am afraid we can rule out an accident. As for
a cure, right now
our
best bet is to keep him closely monitored and soon as our main shipment of
medical supplies
gets
here..... In the mean time I will send out some quires to some other doctors I
know."
Ro'lana stood up and thanked the doctor,
"Umm thanks, you will let me know if anything
happens?"
"Of course. Was there anything else I could do for
you?"
"Actually yes, I seem to
have been having these headaches, and it seems that I may be
having
some recollection problems as well." at that time the doctor saw Tom Davies walk by
and
caught his eye.
"Dr. Davies, could you run a
full neuroscan on Ms. Ro'lana please?"
"Right away doctor" he
said glancing over at Ro'lana, "if you will follow me please."
With that Ro'lana followed the young intern
out of the doctor's small office...

"Of course, Dr. Riswok. My door is always open to you. My condolences on the loss of

"I'd like to thank you for sending

"Dr. Davis was in my office when the

"Yes, my brother and I went to med

and I
went

'treating rich

for nonexistent aches and pains'. "
"Ah, so THAT is what he was doing. No wonder he needs so much training in field
medicine.
"Actually, General, I came to see
you about Lt. Goreran. Nelson Jackbur
may or may not
be an
Imp spy. That's beside the point. He is MY patient! Goreran's delaying of Jackbur's
Bacta
treatment is criminal! Worse! It's
Imperial!"
"Calm down, doctor. Lt. Jackbur got his treatment on time. I,
personally sent a corpsman
to
change the bandages. Corp.
Nukkubacca!"
Dr. Riswok smiled. Corp. Nukkubacca
(please pronounce this New koo bac ca) was a
two and
a half meter tall black furred Wookiee.
Best corpsman in the outfit, with Wookiee
healing
technics she could only guess at. But
he had the bedside manner of a wounded rancor.
He was
Gen. Ma'cambo's corpsman of choice when treating Imp defectors. More than one
Imperial
infiltrator had fled at the sight of Nukkie with a hypo.
"So, how did Lt. Jackbur respond to
Nukkie?"
"A little startled, but no real fear,
no xenophobia. I'm almost persuaded
that Jackbur is
genuine.
I can tell you are, but-" A light flashed on the general's desk. "Ah,
the interrogation
team is
here with their reports. You will be
staying, doctor? We will want a full
medical
report."
