5.04 Detour 11.23.97
Locations:
Leon County, North Florida
Route 43, Leon County
Asekoff Residence
The two surveyors: Marty and Sloan
Marty asks Sloan to go 4 feet to his left, but Sloan cannot
The son's name: Louis/Lewis Asekoff, the dog: Bo
Bo is supposed to help the father-son team find and hunt a possum.
The two agents with Mulder and Scully are Mike Kinsley and Stonecrypher.
Last year's team seminar involved "team builders," where you need to build a tower out of ordinary tower furniture in two minutes. This year's team seminar also has a wine and cheese reception.
Last item on Kinsley/Stonecrypher's tower: electric pencil sharpener, which Stonecrypher had to stand on Kinsley's shoulders to put on.
Scully once went to a constructive problem solving course when she first joined the Bureau, one of the exercises involving not using any negative words.
The word Kinsley found hard not to use in the word exercise: "but"
The tree Kinsley is looking at was here 20 years before Ponce De Leon landed.
Michelle Fazekas is in charge at the scene.
Fazekas found three sets of tracks at the scene; two of the surveyors, one unidentifiable as man or animal.
These woods [Apilachacola National Forest] have panthers and bears.
9:22pm--Loius is watching the black and white version of "The Invisible Man."
Pages and information Mulder is glancing at on his laptop:
Gray wolf with ___ (deer?); 2 female ___ (lionesses?) attacking buffalo, Leopard with ___ thomson (?)
Scully brings a tray of wine and cheese to Mulder's room.
Scully reminds Mulder of this Bureau policy: male and female agents are not to consort in the same motel room while on assignment.
According to Mulder, not one of the over 4000 species native to North America will attack the strongest when the weak is vulnerable.
Scully says that they are in Western Florida; however, the captions read North Florida. Perhaps it's Northwest.
The woods are about 800 square miles large.
When Scully takes the tape out of the VCR, it is 7:03am, and it seems that the channel is set at 5.
The tape for "The Invisible Man" is from the Home Video Series, approx. 1 hr. and 53 min. long [send corrections].
The creatures have a large foot and five toes, but walks on the ball of its foot, compared to the heel to toe method of human walking.
Mulder claims he and his dad were Indian guides.
Jeff Glaser introduces the FLIR--Forward-Looking InfraRed; developed for chopper pilots in Vietnam; detects body heat at 300 yards.
Michelle orders that the only communication in the woods is through short-wave radios.
Scully tells Mulder the Local PD to look for a transient, a drifter, for double homicide in Gasden, Alabama.
The surveyors from the teaser were staking out a new 100,000 acre plot.
A quote from Fox Network's "When Animals Attack" [mistaken for Walt Whitman by Scully]: Nature is populated by creatures either trying to kill something they need to survive, or trying to avoid being killed by something that needs them to survive. If we become blinded by the beauty of nature, we may fail to see its cruelty and violence.
Jeff first sees something twenty yards ahead, then another one 40 yards ahead of Mulder.
According to Scully, ticks can halt their metabolism for up to 18 years, going into suspended animation until something warm-blooded comes along.
30 years ago, the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia was terrorized for over a year by something killing livestock and terrorizing the people, "moth men." There's an X-File on it dating back to 1952.
"The Cockcroach That Ate Cincinnati" is filed under C, and "Moth Men" are under the Ms. Hee hee.
Jeff hasn't seen one of Michelle's stones for twenty minutes.
They then see something about 40 or 50 yards out; as Mulder approaches it, 30 yards ahead, and then went to the right and disappeared.
Mulder fires 5 times, and Scully 6, her only clip [though she says it may have been 7, it was 6].
Mulder has been to the Ice Capades before.
Mulder's view of longevity: "If you're lucky you get 75 years. If you're real lucky you get 80 years. And if you're extraordinarily lucky, you get to have 50 of those years with a decent head of hair."
Scully, choosing from either Wilma or Betty, identifies with Betty's bustline, as Mulder does. Scully also comments that she coud've never been married to Barney though, despite the cute kids.
Lyrics Scully is singing [ok, I'm dumb, what is this song?]: "Jeremiah was a bull frog. Was a good friend of mine. Never understood a single word he said, but I helped him drink his wine. [Chorus:] Joy to the world, all the boys and girls. Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea, joy to you and me."
Scully is up the next morning, having found some wild berries for food.
Scully kills one of the creatures with three shots.
On the pole: "AD NOCTVM," meaning "into darkness," carved onto posts by the Spanish Conquistadors as warning
As he stacks the bodies, Mulder says 20 more bodies and they'll win the honey-baked ham.
Michelle's ambulance license plate: AMB 24
Dates on the tree:
1521--Ponce De Leon lands looking for Fountain of Youth
1861--American...
Mulder conjectures that this species has adapted here for about 400 years.
Scully's motel room: 224, to the left of Mulder's, which is then probably 225.
