"Out of all your getting, get an understanding," was one of my grandmother's favorite sayings. I can hear her, see her, working to teach my sister and myself that the simplest and easiest way to get about in this world is to have a good understanding. To be clear about what is expected of you and what it is that you expect of others. There is no one who will know you well enough to read your mind and instantly supply your wants and deepest needs. So:

• You have to be willing and honest enough with yourself and others to tell them what you want and need.
• You have to be willing and honest enough with yourself and others to live with what they are able to give.
• You have to be willing and honest enough to forgive when others are not able to be what you want or need.
• You have to be willing and honest enough to hear what others are willing to tell you, what they are honest enough to share with you.

As gram would say, "out of all your getting, get an understanding.
