The Dark War
by: Discorde

Heero made his way through the dark alleys passing by the numerous homeless people trying to warm themselves up around a barrel of fire. The nights were cold this time of year and the homeless were dead or dying because of it. But he didn't care, he couldn't feel the icy grip that winter had on the town, all he cared about was completing his mission. Unfortunately he hadn't found what he was looking for and he was getting frustrated. It had been nearly two days since he had gotten to earth and made the journey north to a place they used to call Ontario, Canada and finally ended up in this town, or what was left of it. It was a mystery to everyone why anyone would stay in such a dreary place, the war had destroyed this small town, and it's streets and houses were mostly vacant. "Do you know what they used to call this town," a smelly, old man asked as he took Heero by the arm, "they used to call it Kapuskasing, it used to be real nice, sure the winters were harsh and we didn't have much but at least we had a good name. Now everyone just calls it Krap, it's horrible to think of what the war has done to this place. When I was young..." the old man went on as Heero walked away, he didn't seem to care that no one was listening to him. 'Old fool, he doesn't realize what this place is. He's just food for those who hide in the forest surrounding this place. They are out tonight though, feeding, killing, I can feel it.'

'Yes Heero, you can feel it, you can feel all of it can't you? You can feel them feeding, you can feel them killing but you can also feel their hunger, your hunger. You are their prince Heero, their weaknesses are your weaknesses and you must watch over our people no matter how much you hate them. You must decide who lives, who dies and who gets the privilege of being reborn into our kingdom.' Heero wasn't surprised that the voice he heard was in his head, it had happened so many times before that he had grown used to it. 'I won't have any of the responsibility till you die, and when you do die your kingdom will die with you.' He calmly answered back. 'If that's what you want then so be it, but for now we have other matters to discuss.'

"Come now my son." the voice was so soft and gentle it was as if the wind itself had spoken the words. A hand emerged from the shadows in front of Heero, extending an invitation to him, and he accepted it.

Relena sat by the window in her room, her knees tucked up under her chin and arms wrapped around her legs, he long golder hair spilled out around her lithe form and shined in the late morning sunlight. Her beautiful sea blue eyes were void of any emotion and stared blankly at the frozen trees and the thick blanket of snow that covered the ground. She looked like a statue of a sad angel and she hadn't moved an inch from her sitting position since she had taken it. Twice during the night Sally had come in to check up on her and had tried to get her to bed but Relena refused to move or answer when spoken to. It was as if she wasn't there at all, like she wasn't aware of anything going on around her. 'What happened to make you this way Relena? Who did this to you?' Sally asked herself for the hundreth time as she stared at the young woman by the window and took a sip from her cup of coffee. 'What could possibly turn such a strong young woman into a lifeless shell?' She leaned on the door frame of Relena's room for a while longer before finally turning around and heading down the stairs to join Wufei.

The Chinese man was sitting at the small dining room table looking out the window and sipping at his cofee. 'Poor Wufei' she thought. Although the Gundam Pilot would never admit it he did respect Relena and valued her opinion of things. Last night he had simply reacted out of worry for her and when she yelled at him he had taken every word in and felt ashamed of himself and weak. He had been sitting at the table and thinking on the events of last night for hours now.

"She's right, I never have to pay for the consequences of my actions and I don't have to make real decisions, I'm given orders and I follow them. I'm like one of those mobile dolls, a puppet that does what it's told to do when it's told to do it. I'm ordered to kill and I do it, I never gave any real thought to who was giving the orders, that she was the one who always had to make the decision of who gets to live or die. I've killed her soul with my actions." he said thinking out loud. He hadn't notice Sally's presence yet.

"Wufei..." Sally whispered then walked over to the table and sat next to him, "It's not your fault, if you wouldn't have done it someone else would have. Relena knows that she has no other choice and she doesn't blame you for anything. Everyone pays a price for the peace we live in."

Not caring to pursue the subject he turned towards Sally and asked "Is she still sitting at that window?"

"Yeah, she hasn't moved and she won't talk to me. I understand that she might be a little scared because of the assassination attempt but it's not like it's the first time someon has tried to kill her and she's never reacted like this before. Something must have happened to her on L2. I just wish there was something we could do to..." Sally was cut short by the sound of footsteps in the snow outside and then the doorbell. Both preventer agents got up from thier seats and headed for the front door, leaving their steaming coffee mugs behind.

Duo was waiting impatiently at the door with Hilde by his side, Quatre and Trowa not far behind him. The trip from the shuttle port to the Peacecraft mansion had been longer than he had expected.

As soon as the door opened Duo rushed in pass Sally and Wufei shouting "Hey Wu-man, Sally, got to go I'll see ya in a bit" over his soulder as he ran for the bathroom. Hilde sighed and shook her head, she had told him to go to the bathroom before they left but did he listen, of course not!

"Hi guys, I'm happy to see you" Sally said as she smiled at the group in front of her and then stepped aside allowing them room to enter the house "please come in".

"Thanks Sally, I'm sorry about Duo just barging in like that. I told him before we left that he should have used the bathroom." Sally was going to assure her friend that it was quite alright but Wufei cut in before she could say anything "We've come to expect it from the braided baka." he said just as Duo walked into the room. "Hey, that's not fair. Twice now you guys pick on me, it's not my fault I had to use the bathroom" Quatre and Hilde laughed at Duo's comment and Sally looked at them with a puzzled expression, "What does he mean twice?" she asked. Hilde took Sally by the arm "Come on I'll explain everything to you in the living room" she said as she led her friend to the said room.

"To what do we owe this visit?" Wufei asked the group of men in front of him. "Actually", Quatre answered, "Trowa and I are here to check up on Relena but Duo's got something he wanted to talk to us about."

"Well then talk already Maxwell"

"Not here, let's go somewhere a little more private, I don't want anyone overhearing any of this."

*****

"So that's what happened...I still can't believe that he would just leave her like that." Hilde sighed. "No wonder she's been acting so strangely, yesterday when she came home she actually yelled at Wufei for something he said and then went straight to that window in her room and she hasn't moved an inch since. She's like an empty shell just sitting there". The two women sat in silence contemplating the situation till Sally got up from her seat on the couch "Come on, we better go check up on her, I haven't been up there in a few hours." she said as she headed for the stairs and Relena's room with Hilde following close behind her.

(Meanwhile...)

The four Gundam pilots had gathered in Relena's study. Wufei and Trowa were leaning against opposite walls with their arms crossed, while Quatre sat on the large sofa that was facing the desk, and Duo was sitting in the high back leather chair behind the desk. Duo looked at them one at a time his expression serious before leaning over the desk and saying "Before I say anything at all, you guys have to promise me that this won't go any furter than this room. If you guys tell anyone else I can guarantee that Heero is going to make sure that we are all six feet under. He even swore me to secrecy when I found out, but he's given me permission to tell you guys cause he might need our help"

"Maxwell just tell us what you have to say, stop wasting our time."

"Fine, but just try to keep an open mind ok? Hmm... where do I start? Well, Heero's not exactly normal,"

"I think we were already aware of that, he's the only one of us who could really hadle the zero system without losing it like I did."

"I mean, he's not human... he's actually...kinda..."

"Say it already Maxwell"

"He's half vampire"

"WHAT!!!!"

AN: I know this sucks (it's my shortest chapter yet! :( ) and nothing has really happened yet but believe me their should be a lot of action coming in a little later along the story, so please read on. Anyway, thanks for reading and for being so patient with me. Oh and if anyone who is reading this if from Kapuskasing, then my apologies to you but it happened to be the only small town whose name I could turn to something resembling crap. Review everyone!!!! 1
