My name is Jason. I am 20, I live in Michigan, in a suburb of Detroit. I attend Oakland University, and plan to obtain a bachelors degree in Performing Arts with a specialization in Musical Theater. I like to think of myself as a singer/actor/dancer (in that order). I enjoy singing most of all. I am a Baritone and have been singing for 9 years now.
I also like to stay active in sports. I like playing many different sports including baseball, softball, soccer, floor hockey, football, beach volleyball, and running track. I also like to mountain climb. So needless to say, I am never going to be overweight!
Besides Sports I keep in shape by dancing. I love jazz and hip hop. I love to act and can’t wait to be in more productions.
And as if that wasn’t enough for me to deal with I always find time to read, write, and listen to music. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King (The Dark Tower Series, The Stand), Michael Crichton (The Sphere, Congo, Jurassic Park), and Michael A. Stackpole (Star Wars: X-wing Series). Two of my all time favorite novels are Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, and Crime and Punishment by Fydor Dostoevsky Some of my favorite poets are T.S.Eliot (The Waste Land), e.e.cummings (she being Brand, anyone lived in a pretty how town), and D.H.Lawrence (Lady Chatterly’s Lover). My favorite playwrights are William Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar), and Ann-Marie MacDonald (Goodnight Desdamona (Good Morning Juliet) ). My favorite Shakespearean plays are Much Ado About Nothing and Othello.
Presently I’ll listen to just about any type of music, except New Age (unless I am trying to fall asleep!), Rap, or Heavy Metal (unless I am trying to stay awake, hey its better than coffee!). I love the newer (late 80’s to present) Broadway shows and listen to the soundtracks a lot. My favorites are Rent, Into the Woods, Les Miserables, and Jekyll and Hyde.
Just recently I finished with all my school productions. Last year I was cast in the lead role of the theater departments production of The End Of I. This fall I am planning on being in one of two shows. Either The Seagull by Anton Chekov or Suburbia. Other than that I have One class left before my Auditions in Chicago... Wish me luck!
In the Theater Departments production of Thorton Wilders’ Our Town, I played the role of Constable Warren. I enjoyed doing this show very much, because I got to meet a lot of the theater students and made some great friendships at the same time. I also had the pleasure of working with Director Karen Sheridan. Everyday rehearsal was a new and exciting experience. The show went up in early January, and enjoyed two weeks of great success.
Two weeks after Our Town closed, auditions were held for A Chorus Line. The end result, another part for me to play. This time I was Tom, also known as the boy-in-the-head-band. This time I was working with a new director, Michael Gilliespi. Shortly after rehearsals began, Michael approached me and asked if I could do a little understudying. So I figured sure, a little meant one or two right? Wrong! I ended up understudying all male characters except Zack. Though it was a bit tedious at times I kept with it. In the end it paid off! The show was scheduled to run five days with six shows. On the day of the Friday night performance, one of the actors had to be taken to the hospital an hour and a half before the show started. He was experiencing massive dehydration. So Michael turned to me and said "You are playing Mike tonight Jason." I was in shock for a moment. But everything turned out okay. The show went on and I played Mike that night, and not many people knew the difference. Other than that the shows run went great, the sick actor was back the next day and ready to go. Again I made a bunch of new friends and had the opportunity to work with an amazing director. But it didn’t end there….
This was a really fun show. I got to see what its like to be the lead in a semi-professional state. I got to experiance all the perks and challenges that came along with this role. Needless to say I learned quite a bit. And I grew close to the young lady who played my wife in the show. Her name is Angela, and we have become great friends.
So soon! Well it looks like I’ll be working this summer (woohoo!?). Where am I working? I don’t know yet, but it will be somewhere cool (air-conditioned!). And I am going to try and keep up with my acting and other theatrical talents by going to auditions in my area.
