How Nobility Handles Mortal Life
"Masquerade! Hide your face so the world will never find you!"
~"Masquerade" from Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Look on the writings of the noble Lord Driede, and learn on balancing your dual natures.
"But I know when thou hast stolen away from fairyland..."
~Titania, "A Midsummer's Night Dream" by William Shakepeare
Mortal life and the Sidhe is a difficult concept to explain at best.
We, of all the kith have the most difficult time balancing both lives.
We have more responsibilities than the other kith in both worlds. It is a diffficult
this to balance them, so I will try to make some rhyme and reason to them.
First and foremost: how to survive in the mortal world. As you know, our glamour
supply is starting to go. You know that as well as I do. That makes the world
a dangerous place for creatures of the dream like us. since we are so recent to this world, we
aren't properly equipped to handle the dreams of corporate success and big
steel buildings that mortals have now. They've become so... banal. No longer
are there as many dreams of simple love and happiness. They've lost some of their rich glamour.
But because they've quit dreaming about creatures like us, our presence is
alomst a threat to them and their secure little lives. We're different-
and granted, that is something that will invoke a dream, it is more likely to
make a nightmare in their closed minds. So how do we survive? Be careful. That's how.
It sounds harsh, but respect their right to ignorance. And watch-out for their banality
ridden society. To get caught up in what they call everyday life is the most dangerous of all.
Give the fantastic that you know exists room to fully exsist in your life.
We have no place in mortal society, and it is best that we are ignored. Around an ignortant,
unenchanted mortal FORGET YOUR NOBILITY! To put it bluntly, they will wonder
what the hell is wrong with you. If you feel the need to always act noble and high and mighty, I strongly suggest that you take
up a permanent residence in the Dreaming. Since we are so recently come from Arcaidia, we needn't
worry about the ravages of bedlam as much as the more earth bound Changelings do. In fact, I highly recommend to all Sidhe to spend
as much time in the Dreaming as possible. Mortal life is not for us. Their concepts of
wealth and privelge are seductive, but we have more than they could ever imagine
inside the Dreaming.
However, if you feel the need to fully live up the mortal side of your exsistance,
do it carefully. Pick an occupation that doesn't invoke too much banality. I suggest
something in the Arts. For the Sidhe, politics in the mortal world may sound like
an intriguing pastime, but they are just a dangerous for several reasons. First, it will bring you into contact
with more unenchanted mortals than you may care to meet, and you also run the risk of revealing your true
nature to them. Remember also that their politic are nothing like ours. They are open and brash- unlike our
subtle and noble politics. There is no concept of nobility within their politics.
And above all, avoid the Autumn People that reside within their ranks. They pose the greatest danger to us. Good Luck!
A note from Her Grace: I deeply regret to say that for all of his wisdom, the venerable Lord Driede fell victim to Banality, and his fae nature was washed away when he spent too much time in the mortal world. Please keep this in mind as you reflect upon this page. Here in the court we all deeply miss him. ~Duchess Rokzana
