Noblisse Oblige
"It is of great consequence to disguise your inclination, and to play the hypocrite well."
~Machivelli, The Prince
All rise for Her Grace the Duchess Rokzana of the most noble House Fiona!
Good day, all. I see you are interested in the Noblisse Oblige of our splendid Nobility. Well then, please seat yourself and listen.
Firstly, as a Noble, retain your honor and do not use and abuse your vassals. They are not servants or slaves, but a proud folk without titles. Be fair in all treatment toward them, and protect them when cause calls for it. Post your laws, and let them be known to all. Finally, above all, follow the Escheat.
Remember that there are consequences for not treating your vassals fairly. These incluse a rebellion which may usurp your power. Indeed, it is in your best interest to treat them well.
You, however, can also expect respect from them. You may punish one if the situation calls, and you have been wronged. Be just and fair in your punishment, and it's best not to make examples of commoners who hav broken the rules, as then you will be ruling by fear. When one rules by fear, they can expect unhappiness in their kingdom.
It is also acceptable for you to go out into your kingdom in discuise. in fact, I highly recommend it, for although you will be recognised as Sidhe, you mightn't be recognised as the ruler. (And it is bad form for a commoner to point you out then you are in costume). this is a good way to see the true state of affairs first hand in your area. But be sure you are familiar with the ways of the commoners before you attempt such a venture (remember Jasmine in the movie "Aladin"?).
Our Noblisse Oblige also demands we appear noble to those under us! We need to have an aura about us that bespeaks of nobility. This ensures respect. Next, to keep everything running smothly, we need to keep in contact with other Nobles, not just through letters, but through a network of balls, parties, dinners, ect. This would explain the large number of these events that occur within the Sidhe society. Pageantry... that's what it's all about. We are creatures that are close to perfection as the World of Darknes will allow. We must appear as close to that as possible to maintain our status. The esteem of a noble who begins to let his or her faults show loses innumerable respect among their peers. When we lose respect amongst ourselves, it infallibly shows to the others, and then your commoners lose respeect for you.
Maintaining contact with all the kiths is important too. Be sure to always invite one or two high ranking ones to any social gathering. That brings up another point. Be sure that you act noble around those of lesser rank than yourself. Don't be condescending, but without making them feel worthless, let them know you are above them.
The subtle texture of our society demands that everything be done CAREFULLY! If one goes out looking for advancement on the social ladder, be delicate and subtle about your moves. Anything loud and brash will end in as regression instead of progress. Appeal without brown nosing. Heroic deeds would be a good thing, here too. Show how wonderful you are without showing off. Remember the word "modesty". I have noted there are many a Sidhe who would look utterly confused if it were to be montioned. However, I must say, anyone who is moved up on the social ladder by a higher up will be resented by others of their old and new status- no matter how universally loved. Acting above their station. It will fade in time, but they will never quite be one of them. Keep in mind that Noblisse Oblige is not only from Noble to Commoner, but Noble to Noble. This ties in closely with mannerisms and politeness, so learn your etiquette well!
