Enigma

What happens when snooty we’re more intelligent aliens with a deadly past get saved by primitives of earth. But why are they like the way they are and what secrets do they hold.

Plot

SG-1 arrives at a planet that has become volcanic and as they leave Daniel notices a body, they are able to save a few of the people. When they come back, General Hammond congratulates them, but given the cold shoulder by the people they saved. They don’t like the fact they are on a world more primitive than their own, at least the leader is. One of the group Nar’eam having taken a liking to Sam opens up to her. They helped another civilisation on the same technological level as earth but the information destroyed the people of that world and their own. Colonel Maybourne arrives from NIB with orders to take the aliens back to another base. The aliens, Tollan’s, leader rejects world put to him as a plan by the SGC to save them, they are more primitive than earth in his eyes. Maybourne moves his plans to move them forward after being stalled by the SGC. SG-1 comes up with a plan to thwart Colonel Maybourne. They tell General Hammond that since Daniel isn’t military he can’t be court marshalled. Daniel goes to the Tollans, with the offer of the Nox world, the leader softens to Daniel and as they are trying to contact the Nox he tries to explain how it is done, though Daniel has to admit he doesn't understand. Sam and Nar’eam say their byes. Daniel and the Tollans go to the embarkment/gate room where Lya meets them telling Daniel he has changed while the others haven’t she greets the Tollans and they leave to go to the Nox world. The leader of the Tollans hopes to see Daniel again. Colonel Maybourne leaves not pleased with Daniel or the SGC.

Gripes

None at the moment though I never took physics In high school. Why did I have take Chemistry and Biology? Though I must say the Ancient History is paying off.

Favourite Scene

That’s hard. As a Daniel/Sam relationshipper I know what scenes I hate. Okay Daniel when he’s at the gate and he stands up to Colonel Maybourne alone even though Teal’c is there and the way Lya and Omoc (sp?) both talk to Daniel.

Acting

Again this is another strong effort by everyone. It is a Daniel and Sam episode, so.... Amanda Tapping gets to show another fasciate to her character as she develops feelings for Nar’eam and tries to talk of Earth and Physics and then learning to deal with his leaving, (as a shiver goes up my spine). Michael Shanks does a fantastic job of Daniel especially when standing up to Colonel Maybourne multiple times. Also when he stands up to Omoc when he politely tells him that he is being rude by continuously calling them primitive, or trying to understand Tollan physics that even Sam can’t understand fully. Don S. Davis is a laugh as he pretends not to know what’s going on when Daniel breaks the Tollans free. Richard Dean Anderson and Christopher Judge give fine support to the others. I actually hope Colonel Maybourne pops up at a later date to take on not only Daniel but also the SGC on. The guy who plays him was fantastic as the villain with a mission that had to be completed.

Writer

Katharyn Powers does a mighty fine job of giving us a riddle in the form of the Tollans. A mystery as Daniel and Sam in their own methods try to find answers. Like Emancipation they use the obvious, Daniel is the only true Civilian on the team, however in this episode it works. It could also lead to interesting problems with Colonel Maybourne later.

8 Tollans out of 10 Nox

"Military intelligence that I can understand. But the President I voted for him." Daniel
