HATHOR
On the first watch I just cracked up laughing in it. I think it was the fact I kept getting images of GI Jane (before the movie) running amuck. Something I don't think the writer was aiming for. But subsequent watches have made it quiet enjoyable and less comical. It is still a lighthearted one compared to the seriousness of the situation.
The Plot
Hathor is let out and makes Daniel her new Pharaoh (a marriage of sorts takes place), Jack almost becomes her first new Jaffa and the General allows her free run of the base. It is up to Teal'c, Dr. Fraiser, Sam and the other female officers to save the day. They get caught in their first attempt to rescue the men and thus the base. Using the femininity the women escape and save Jack from his Jaffa State. Jack and Sam then have to save the others, since Teal'c and Dr. Fraiser are injured. All of Hathor's and Daniel's infant Goa'ulds die and she flees to Chul'ack leaving her new Pharaoh behind to reveal such things as that most of the Goa'uld lava DNA will be his.
Gripes
1) Daniel introduces Hathor as "the Egyptian goddess of fertility, inebriety and music," which she was known for among other things. They also show her in the cow form, which in most cases is how she is pictured. They even get her symbol right on the sarcophagus. The writer spoils also this work by having Sam associate Hathor with Ceres rather than Venus. Ceres was an agricultural goddess, not of love like Aphrodite and thus Venus in Roman Mythology, whom Hathor is more commonly tied to.
2) Once Jack went into the sarcophagus, he should have started to remember everything else after that since it would have blocked the effect of Hathor's pheromone thing.
3) Daniel in the guest room scene is all wrong on two accounts. Daniel is fully clothed; at least they could have had him without his shirt, yet he even has his jacket on. Second Sam comes in and Daniel is not moving or talking and yet neither see or Dr. Fraiser even seem to react to this or see it as a problem.
4) If Hathor was on earth wouldn't she already have "the code of life." So she wouldn't have to have had sex with Daniel. I suppose she could have been doing it for her own enjoyment. I suppose you could argue that after all that time she needs to update her code. But then wouldn't the other Goa'ulds need to do the same thing.
5) Daniel explains she's a Goa'uld yet Sam says "back up did you say a Goa'uld," later in the same conversation. Maybe they should of kept her awake when Daniel mention it since she was in the same room at the time.
6) Hathor didn't bring the sarcophagus rather the archaeologist sent it to Dr. Jackson. And the Sam and Teal'c were there when it was first shown by Daniel, who told them how it got there.
7) After Hathor leaves Daniel and Jack didn't know what's going on, how did it all come back to them? This in relation to Daniel saying that most of the DNA in the burnt and dead Goa'uld lava would be his.
8) Jack never saw the sarcophagus in the movie, how would he know about it? And before you say that Daniel told him, why couldn't they take ten seconds to have one line to mention that.
Favourite Scene or Nice touches.
That's a hard one, Daniel taking control over the General, and at the end where he tells the others most of the DNA will be his. (I wouldn't say any more the grounds that anything I say or don't say will be used against me...)
Acting
This is a strange one to do I mean I couldn't help the giggles and once I start I can't stop. (I even got kicked out of class on two occasions because I couldn't stop laughing) I'm sorry I'm even laughing now. Amanda Tapping is definitely found her characters, place among the female officers, as she rallies the female soldiers to save the day. Teryl Rothery gets in on the action and holds her won. She plays Dr. Fraiser, whom I wish had a first name, as able to look after herself yet not up to the standard of the others after all she is a medical doctor first, airforce officer second. Don S. Davis plays the dewy eyed General willing to protect a Goa'uld queen and shows that he can play Hammond under possession, be it Hathor or Daniel extremely convincingly. Richard Dean Anderson gets some great parts, his long story about the woman on 73rd, dismissing Sam's concerns to helping to free the base from the Queen. Christopher Judge for his little bit was compelling in his warnings about Hathor especially when he is proven right. Michael Shanks, between him and the GI Jane crew the giggles started (Hathor dose have taste in men.) But to acting, he was interesting in the role wavering between loyalty to the others and his love Hathor who controlled him for the episode. I love when after Hathor leaves the realisation of what had happen to him dawns and shyly saying that most of the DNA would be his. As for the Suanne Braun who played Hathor, I would love to see more of her; she really got into the role. (Although Michael Shanks may have had something to do with that:)
Writer
The writers of this wrote a good story, even if I did get the giggles from it to the point I was actually rolling on the floor laughing. What I enjoyed is the fact they knew about Hathor, a favourite out of the ancient god and goddess due to her complexity. I like the irony that Daniel shot the Goa'uld lava on Chul'ack only to help Hathor to create replacements for them. Gets you thinking if the Goa'uld lava now on Chul'ack is Daniel's and Hathor's, and were the previous ones Sha'uri's.
9.5 Hathor Goa'uld Lava out of 10 Sha'uri Goa'uld lava
"What's she going to do beat us up." Daniel
"It's time you became our chosen one." Hathor to Daniel
