There But For The Grace Of God
This is really great one, which again shows the versatility of the actors to play a different spin in their Characters. Though it did have flashes of the Exodus from Sliders (see I watch something other than X-Files and Stargate) and It’s a wonderful life, but it shows just how strong an effect Daniel has had on the project and the people involved.
Plot
SG-1 arrives on P3R233 here, Daniel and Sam find evidence of a culture that had gone through the gate to other worlds, while Jack and Teal’c find that the Goa'uld have marked the planet for destruction. Told they must leave Daniel starts grabbing artefacts when he touches on it makes a strange noise and a mirror shows up not seeing his reaction he touches the mirror and a weird flash goes over him. He then heads to the gate calling for the others thinking they left without him, he dials home to be greeted by soldiers with guns and Colonel Hammond. Daniel is taken and drugged to check for the presences of the Goa'uld. Later when he wakes up he talks to Catherine or Dr. Langford, as she would rather be known as. It is she not Daniel that broke the Stargate code, though they referenced his work after he said no to the project. General O'Neill talks to Daniel after Catherine mentions he knows things. Daniel talks to Jack telling him about what’s going on as he sees it and how he knows him, he gives them the coordinates to Chu’lack, the Jaffa homeworld. Dr. Carter comes in at that moment, and says how they have lost some more towns. Daniel then finds out what is happening. Later while Daniel is talking to Dr. Langford, he sees that General O'Neill is sending a bomb to Chu’lack and Daniel can’t stop it. Now Dr. Carter, Dr. Langford and Daniel realise he may be in an alternate Earth. While the others are busy Daniel searches for the Dr. Jackson of this world and finds out that he probably dead in Egypt. General O'Neill starts closing up the base to make it harder for the Jaffa to get in. The Doctor (weird considering my feelings for Dr. Who) play with a message that came from P3R233. They learn that the Goa'uld attack address. The Gate is theirs to try to Dial in the Beta Site but they fail, cause the Goa'uld can dial in faster. The SG-1 team of this world tries to figure out their options. 1) Send a bomb to the place the attack originated. 2) Send the people to the beta site. 3) Help Daniel save his world. Option three wins since there is no real time left anyway. General O'Neill goes to talk to Teal’c since he seemed okay in the video, but dies cause of the destruction of his homeworld. Colonel Hammond dies protecting the Stargate. Dr. Carter dies trying to get the remote for the mirror. Dr. Langford dies helping to set the Stargate in action for Daniel. While trying to escape Teal’c first prime of Apothsis shots Daniel just before he reaches the gate and shortly after that the SGA blows up. Daniel back on the alternate P3R233 injured touches the mirror. The other members of SG-1 and a few other who were looking for Daniel. Daniel screams they go and find him injured with and Stargate address. Daniel tells them they are coming.
Gripes
No obvious ones and even the one I had can be answered. Well I was thinking why could Daniel go to the Beta site and dial in from there to P3R233. Then I thought that the address could be valid on for earth, though why more people couldn't go with Daniel and then go to the Beta point. Ops same argument for the reverse applies. Well it could be that I really love this episode (just see the amount of detail in the Plotline section :) and maybe that blinds me to any faults with this episode. I must say it’s interesting to see how much of an effect Daniel had on the others lives. But the trick is not to read too much into the differences. Though I think I should take my own advice, sometimes.
Favourite Scene
That’s a hard one since I usually can reduce an episode after my first viewing that is not the case with this one, which still stands at 45 minutes. So I would say when Daniel finds out he’s dead and any scenes with him and Catherine. My Interest was kind of peaked at the fact that General O'Neill and Dr. Carter are engaged, but ha that’s an alternate reality not the one I love.
Acting
Everybody even Sergeant Dialler gets to shine in this script with the others getting to play different versions of their characters Michael Shanks is forced to deal with this his Daniel Jackson, and boy isn’t it great. First he angry over the fact they have to leave P3R233. When he gets home (click your heals three times Daniel and say their is no place like home) he plays him as though it’s a joke, then he has to try to get the others to understand he is part of the SGC. Later he accepts his fate and tries to help the others and then he gets the others to help him. I especially like when he realises he is dead in that reality. The others are great as they alter from ignoring Daniel to trying to find out what he knows and finally giving up their own lives to help him and his world. Richard Dean Anderson is so good as the General who has never meet Daniel or had his life easied by the realisation that others have had problems too. I thought the Colonel was bad but General O'Neill... I must say I like his more hands on attitude as compared to Don S. Davis as General Hammond. Speaking of which I really like the way he gets to play G.I.Joe with Colonel Hammond. You can actually picture Colonel Hammond going on Stargate missions. Amanda Tapping as Dr. Samantha Carter is actually more military minded than Captain Carter. She has no time for Daniel and his problems since she is worried about her genesis list. Sergeant Dialler got to play more of a role and even gets in the action though like all the others he dies. Elizabeth Hoffman as Catherine once again gets to show her softer side for Daniel. She and Michael Shanks have a great chemistry and work perfectly off each other, antagonising each other at the start to later where Catherine gives up her life for Daniel’s
Writer
Story by David Kemper though I wonder how much of the story was change when scripted by Robert C. Cooper. I simply can’t put into words how great this script is. Not only is it fascinating, well written and well thought out in it’s own right. As a Fanfic writer it offers a delicious possibilities to go into the relationships and possibilities of other worlds. Mostly though just how much is "Daniel" and how much is the other reality itself responsible for the differences. But on the main it humbles the mind to see that no matter how far I go it will take years to reach this potential.
