Within The Serpent’s Grasp

I hate waiting, though Aussie viewers got the next episode the week after this one :)

So let’s pretend I had to wait. X-files does this all the time. It’s these kinds of endings that make me appreciate the Pretender Final from first Season (sure there were lose ends but not this bad). But they all have one thing in common they all killed off a favourite character of mine (or appear to as more often the case).

Plot

With General Hammond unable to save the SGC, SG-1 disobey orders and goes to the destination that Daniel received in the alternate reality. There they find themselves on a Goa'uld ship under the control of Klorel who is the Goa'uld that possessed Skarra. After checking the ship out Jack and Teal’c are caught and taken to a screen like thing that Klorel uses to keep in touch with Apothsis, and are sentenced to death. Sam and Daniel hearing this decide to rescue them and set the timers on the bombs for 24 hours. During the rescue mission Klorel who uses the ribbon device on him catches Daniel. Jack is forced to kill Skarra to save Daniel. SG-1 sees that they are close to Earth. And we see the now infamous "to be continued" sign and my mantra "at least there is another season" starts even if it is next week.

Gripes

Well the mantra is blocking any gripes aside when I wanted to yell at Jack taking too long to save Daniel. I never studied physics as I have mentioned before so I leave that up to people who know what they are talking about to nitpick that. And why did they have to kill Skarra, Kalwasky was bad enough. My favourites from the movie are dropping like flies, it leaves just Daniel and Sha'uri, though I don’t really like her in the series, maybe it would be better if she died, but that brings about another can of worms. Though I think Skarra will do a Unas as the Zad gun wasn’t used on him just Daniel’s pistol. Okay so I thought of a few more substantial gripes.

1) In the pilot movie "Children of the Gods" it look like Aztec or Mayan who choose and took Skarra. Yet Klorel claims to be the son of Apothsis. I can’t picture Apothsis allowing another Goa'uld picking is son’s host body, and thus he didn’t pick his body like Klorel said. For that matter can’t picture them sharing hosts with others.

2) I think they need to explain how the Goa'uld multiply.

3) What does Daniel have a Goa'uld. I though it would take more than about two days to heal from a staff weapon.

Favourite Scene

Jack trying to talk to Skarra and he is forced to use the Zad Gun which leads to a nice touch in that Teal’c doesn’t shot Skarra cause he would of surely died.

Nice Touches

As before about Skarra, but it was also nice to see Ferriti, though how long he be alive I’m not betting on.

Acting

Everybody did a fantastic job in this one from the regular cast to the regular re-occurring. Okay so two episodes don't count so I’ll include Skarra/Klorel and Ferriti to that list. Alex Cruz was just so fantastic and so believable as the mean and nasty Klorel who would kill his hosts brother-in-law, and as the kind hearted and naive Skarra, who yells for his family sister Sha'uri and Daniel and asks for O'Neill for forgiveness. It is these scenes that are some of the best for Richard Dean Anderson in this episode as he tries to fight for the young boy that he made friends with on his first mission to Abydos. Alex Cruz was really a scene-stealer. Don S. Davis also puts in a fine performance as General Hammond who is forced to bring back SG-1 for a court marshal till he’s marshalling the troops to protect against Dr. Jackson’s nightmare. And Sergeant Dialler for his performance needs a name and more than the rank of Sergeant. Okay Christopher Judge gets to so more with Teal’c as he helps Daniel to get the others to go, to explaining what’s going on in the ship and the Klorel, Daniel ribbon incident as it will be forever known as. Amanda Tapping doesn’t actually get much but she does make the most of it. When she takes her fine time to tell the others she’ll go, it shows that Carter is making the choice on her own terms, to telling Daniel that they are going to save the Colonel and Teal’c. Michael Shanks does a mighty fine job of that ribbon incident and has all the fighting passion you would expect of Daniel as he tries to get the others to believe his experience in the alternate reality. But He suffers the same fate as Amanda Tapping he was slightly under used in this script, as was the guy who plays Ferriti.

Writers

Story was by James Crocker and the script by Jonathan Glassner. They have done a great job for the last script of Season One (in American Order lets not get into the Channel Seven Season debate again). It has me waiting to know how they get off the ship. They also have included many small touches that add to the script, Skarra calling for his family, Jack mourning over Skarra. The Script explains how the ship could get there in a few days or hours instead of leaving it up to the viewer to come up with a theory it’s little things that make it so good.
