BRIEF CANDLE

It’s revenge on Jack for the "Daniel you dog," and "Oh! I like women," comments. This episode is a strange one; I like it yet at the same time I found it tedious and irritating. Richard Dean Anderson does a brilliant job as an elderly gentleman.

The Plot

They go to a planet where the Stargate is in a temple where two locals are now hiding; the female is in labour. It is up to Daniel to help deliver the baby. They help celebrate the birth of baby Daniel. At the party Jack inadvertently gets married and infected with a nanocite, that causes him to age drastically. The others are faced with a rush against time to save Jack. While Jack has to deal with the fact he is dying. It is the local’s who help find the curer without realising it when they knock down a statue of Pelops which has the controller of the nanocite. Jack and Kynthia, his new "wife," walkout of the area they stay awake when they others fall asleep and don’t wake up. Jack calls the others they then turn on the required frequency and they locals start to age normally and Jack will return back to his old looks.

Gripes

1) If at the end of the episode the nanocites disappeared after twelve hours cause the radio wave wasn’t sent. Then why didn’t a similar thing start occurring in the samples or at the very least they didn’t continue multiplying at such a fast rate.

And the usual.

Favourite Scene or Nice touches.

The others trying to say bye to Jack and Jack is writing his goodbyes to his ex-wife. And Daniel delivering the baby.

Acting

Richard Dean Anderson gives a very convincing rendition of O'Neill as an elderly man. He also gives us a realistic insight into what is going through O'Neill's head, from surprise, anger and then acceptance of his fate. The others give great support in this episode since they don’t have much in the way of scenes. Though Don S. Davis when he tells Daniel that O'Neill is to stay on the planet and no more test are to been done was very powerful. Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping delivering baby Daniel was a hoot.

Writer

Story was by Steven Barnes and scripted by Katharyn Powers. Usually the concepts of somebody going through rapid aging turns me off see the X-Files. This time it was well done and allowed us to see more into the relationships between the characters especially in relation to Jack. It is interesting to have Daniel getting angry over the General lack of wanting to help. We also get some more insight into Jack’s personality and how he has developed since the movie.
