Solitude: The Cop Out
This episode is such a major cop out as far as an episode goes. Boy do I have such gripes or Nit picks over this episode. A second gate! This is such a easy Solution to some problems however it posses new ones, mostly caused by the position chosen for the second gate. I really wish I could have taken a baseball bat to Daniel in this episode. (Though I don’t think I could have done damage to him ;)
Daniel poses a couple of theories surrounding a second gate on Earth. Firstly let’s deal with the fact the second gate caused some of the other worlds to have similar civilisation to our Earth ones. In this Brad Wright in my opinion is trying to explain the fact of why some of the other worlds speak English. But all the civilisations died out long before English as we know it came about, so that doesn’t work. The same part of this theory is also trying to explain at the very least the cultures that existed after Egypt for example the touched and untouched having a Minoan (Broca Divide), feel, a culture that developed long after the gate had been buried according to the movie. Fine, but Antarctica was under ice since 4,000 BC, at that time Sumerians were creating the earliest known civilisation in Mesopotamia (Fire and Water). This is long before Egypt came into existence. Mighty chilly for the guard.
In the main theory Daniel once again postulates that another alien group may have placed the second gate. If that’s true the Goa'uld wouldn’t have had access to those cultures that came after Egypt, such as the people of Argos (Brief Candle), they wouldn’t have known about the gate. If they had known Ra would of come back even if all the gods are out for their own glory, since the Goa'ulds can track wormholes (Singularity). Then if you assume the Goa'uld had access to the second gate, then what of Thor’s race (Thor’s Hammer)? His "People" whose culture came long after the first gate was lost. I don’t think the Goa'uld would leave access to the second gate to an enemy alien group. Now I thought what if Thor’s race won the gate or they got control of it back (don’t think they would of lost control since they are superior to the Goa'uld) from the Goa'uld, but then that wouldn’t explain away the frozen serpent guard that would belong to Apothsis.
Then there is the fact that Goa'ulds are very possessive in nature. They hate the earthlings messing in their business. I don’t think they would lose access to the gate that easily. With Antarctica under ice since 4,000 BC they must have had the technology to keep the ice or cold from effecting the controls or the DHD and having access to it. There is no reason given why they left at all and then forgot about the gate that one of them would genetically remember (Enemy Within). I think that Wright tried to say by the frozen guard that it happen suddenly, however if I remember rightly it was the shifting of the magnetic poles that caused the ice to come and the shifting of ice was and is not a terribly sudden phenomena.
Then Daniel starts up with that you can’t ring yourself. "What happens when you call yourself" Daniel. "You get a busy signal." General Hammond. Later he says even if it has a different point of origin. Now judging by Sam’s reaction I would say that there is a different point of origin, hence, she thinks they are on a different planet. Also since the second gate is in the Southern Hemisphere it should have different chevrons (something yet not explained in the series as if they are different this could of caused problems in Children of the Gods as translation of the original destinations. Tough they could all be the same except point of Origin throwing out the constellation theory from the movie) as they have different view of the constellations (than that of the Northern Hemisphere) on which the gate destinations are based on. Okay now here the thing, last time I looked 555 2787 is different to 555 2788, as is the case if you have two different home lines. In that case you can ring yourself on the other line. With this fact in mind the analogy falls flat on it’s face. The second gate has a different point of origin thus a different number and would allow somebody to ring. (I’m not arguing the physics if it’s possible or not just the analogy.)
Okay lets leave Daniel alone for the moment and move on to Jack and Sam. Being intelligent people wouldn’t they try another world before they simply gave up and died, when Earth didn’t work? They could have tried a world they had been to that had friendly people, such as Argos, among many others. But they give up a touch too early, even if they don’t get to earth from there they could get medical assistance and a new place to live.
I personally think having the second gate in the jungles of South America or outback Australia could have reduced some of the problems. And then have it that Thor’s race took control of it and put it up a force field around it and as Thor’s race is non-evasive of our world they left us to develop and forgot about it, the force field still allowed earthlings in etc.....
