ENEMY WITHIN
This one is boring in relation to action. However intellectually it is a must watch. It explains about the other worlds and tells us more in relation to the mythology surrounding the Goa'uld and the Jaffa. Though all this was done at the expense of Kalwasky's life.
The Plot
Basically the plot is two fold. It’s Teal'c and Kalwasky episode, with O'Neill running interface. Teal'c is being questioned by General Kennedy, who is interested in all the information that the Jaffa can provide. He also wants to take him back to the Pentagon for research. While Jack tries to help and teach him about human nature. Kalwasky is trying to fight becoming a Goa'uld host, with Jack’s help. Sam and Daniel are more or less shown as fill-ins.
Gripes
1) They point out the obvious about other worlds being populated by the peoples of earth. If it happened on Abydos it could happen elsewhere. Fine Teal'c didn’t know earth was the original homeworld but surely the others did, especially if the read the Colonel's report.
2) Daniel is a bigger person than I to want to help defend a person involved in his wife's kidnapping and subsequent possession, than me. Not a real gripe, just a observation.
3) Did they really have to kill Kalwasky I liked the character? They could of let him be a rouge Goa'uld or have another soldier with the problem. I suppose they needed a character we knew and felt attach too, still don't make it any easier. They couldn’t cure him because it would be way too easy to then use that method on Sha'uri and Skaara latter.
Favourite Scene or Nice touches.
Nice touches, Daniel and Sam talking about his insomnia, a problem I understand. And later them teaching the other teams that help set-up what they do when they aren’t on mission with SG-1. O'Neill care and concern over his friends.
Acting
Richard Dean Anderson gets to show more of what he can do. I like his scene when he interacting with Christopher Judge in trying to make sure the right thing happens by Teal'c or trying to help Kalwasky fight the Goa'uld or telling him in his own words that he won’t die. Christopher Judge gets to shine in this episode as he learns about earth and realise a few facts about his fate and others in a similar plight to his own. He plays Teal'c as a calm man resigned to the fact he will be a research project for military scientist. Jay Acovone has a dramatically contrasting role. I liked Kalwasky, be it in the movie or the series, and I’m disappointed he was killed in the name of progressing the series. Acovone plays both the Kalwasky appalled by what he has done to his friends, to the Goa'uld set to destroy the SGC brilliantly and makes it all the more sadder we are never to see him on this show again. Don S. Davis again doses a great job in his role letting the General concern for his personal show without losing the airforce facade. Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping are both basically sacrificed for the sake of the plot. But they do shine in the little given to them in respect to the others. I like Michael Shanks when he is talking to Kalwasky about the Goa'uld. Sam concern over the well being of Daniel is touching, Amanda Tapping dose a great job not to make it and overly sappy moment.
Writer
Brad Wright has moments, a great scene here and there, but then lack in others. It dose start to develop the Goa'uld and Jaffa mythologies and the workings of the SGC and the military around it. Thought I think they could have done more with some of the other characters.
6 Goa'uld of 10 SGC
