- Mary Sue, n. A character who is a transparent double for the
author of the story. A story featuring such a character. Although
writing a Mary Sue accidentally is considered terribly gauche, many
experienced authors enjoy playing with the concept in order to depict
themselves in mock argument with their characters or to write their
friends cameo appearances as gifts.
Several wonderfully over-the-top examples of this are
Having Written
by Jungle Kitty (TOS, R for language*)
to illustrate the 'writer v. character' plot and
Dire Wolf by
Greywolf the Wanderer (TOS, PG-13 for tickling) to show the 'guest
appearance' angle.

'Having Written' isn't self-rated by the author, and
the first time I used it on this page as an illustration I rated it
PG, which I still feel that it is, in spirit. However, I managed to
overlook one key line ("So how come I ended up tied to the
navigational console with a Vulcan dildo up my ass?") which technically,
I admit, makes it R. What it says about me that I didn't even blink
at this sentence is left for the reader to decide...
