Hillary Blackwell came to Haven as a young, unmarried, pregnant woman. Spurned by her own community, she had wandered on her own until finding Haven. The people had not judged her, but had merely brought her in to have the baby and to be part of the community. It was unlike anyplace Hillary had been before. There were stares and gossip as one would expect, but no one openly confronted her with accusations of impropriety. She came to like the place.
When Cassie was born, Hillary had decided to stay. She also had decided to give back to the town by using her healing powers. Hillary's grandmother had been a remarkable healer and had taught her the ways of herbs, roots, and poultices as well as the channeling link to healing magics that lay just below each patient's psyche. Hillary was already quite an accomplished healer before coming to the town and the ability had grown with time and practice.
Over the years she had become an important member of the town, treating everything from midwifery to disease. Her reputation was quite broad and the occasional traveler made long pilgrimages to benefit from her healing talents. She maintained the claim that the healing she offered included herbs and alchemic lore, but she knew that it was the magic of her touch and the ability to enter the patient's illness and fight it back that brought the greatest relief.
The residents never brought up the questionable circumstances of her arrival, and she had never volunteered information on Hillary's father or of her own past. The arrangement worked well for all involved. Only her daughter, Cassie, ever heard the phrase Bastard, and that was only from the group of boys led by Tomar.
