THE CHECK IS IN THE JAIL

August 8, 2002 -- A Staten Island mailman who was pulled over for a routine DWI check wasn't just drunk - he had 20 bags of undelivered mail in the trunk of his car, police said yesterday.
Raymond Schultz, 53, was stopped Sunday when cops spotted him driving erratically.
Police said Schultz's eyes were bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol when cops quizzed him.
Schultz, who has been working as a letter carrier for six years, was later found with a blood-alcohol level of .30 - three times the legal limit - police said.
Police inadvertently found 20 sacks of mail after his car was impounded and searched the next day, authorities said. A U.S. Postal Service spokesman could not be reached.
Schultz was charged with criminal possession of stolen property. He could also face charges of DWI and federal charges of mail tampering and obstruction of government administration.
