About Ship: The Raven (Romulan designation unknown) was a very fast, fighter-sized vessel used by the Romulans from around 2271 to the end of the 23d century. It was designed to escort a flight of fighters to penetrate enemy-held regions of space (presumably the Federation) using a cloaking device to avoid detection. The large sphere at the aft of the vessel contains a cloaking device that can exctend its cloaking field to cover a fairly large volume of space behind the Raven. It is within this cloaked field that the fighters follow in formation.
Derived from the Starhawk heavy fighter, the Raven was apparently unarmed. Although it was presumably defended by its fighter escort, the Raven's best defense was its cloaking device, and it's weapon was the squadron of fighters it conveyed to their objective.
There is some question as to the nature of the Raven's sublight propulsion system. None of the information from which this report derives gives a clear picture of this system. Various sources give contradicting information. Starfleet Intelligence has determined that the Raven's sublight engines were probably conventional impulse engines, considering that the vessel it is based on also used that type of propulsion system. As the cloaking sphere at the aft of the vessel occupies the position that a conventional impulse drive would be installed, the Raven presumably vectored the thrust through slots in its trailing edge.
Most of our information of this vessel has been derived from intelligence gathered by clandestine means. The image shown above is a composite derived from descriptions of the vessel and several poor-quality images obtained by clandestine means.
