Major Cities of Cathu

These three cities are the seats of the prefects of the Kingdom of Cathu. Each one is considerably smaller than Cathain, but they are still the more important towns of the kingdom.

Caerwick

Caerwick is a fortified town to the north of the kingdom. Being closest to the northern passes to Catharzon, it has grown slower than the other towns. Its entire population has remained inside of the town walls.

The surrounding land is hilly, yet well cultivated, and supplies most of the produce for Cathain to the south.

Count Derval DeNoir is the prefect seated in this northern wick. He is seen as fair in most cases, but has been known to dish out rather nasty punishments of his own devising, rather than the usual punishments set by the law. A close childhood friend of King Pallifore, he also spends a lot of time in Cathain. Derval has strong Cathar blood and is descended from one that escaped expulsion long ago. He is a strong Cathar sympathizer.

Earlwick

Seat of the Earls of Winton, Tannebor de Winton is the current prefect of the west wick. The town is situated on the shores of Lake Winton to the west of the kingdom. The town grew as it occupied the key strategic position of the only land route linking north and south. It is also close enough to have guarded the pass to Dalsu at one time.

The town is partially walled, protected by the lake on the eastern side. The castle is built on a small hill near the lake with the town around it. Due to the lack of height the keep has a tall tower to provide a look out over the surrounding lands. The town has good agricultural land as well as a small fishing port. Trade has two routes, by land to the north and south, West to Dalsu and the other kingdoms, and by river to Cathain.

Earl Tannebor was not destined to be the prefect. He was about to be sanctified as a knight of the church (i.e. a Paladin) when his brother, the previous prefect, died in suspicious circumstances while hunting in the North with Count Derval. The Earl mistrusts Derval but lacks evidence. Only his devotion to his duty as prefect prevents him from spending more time in Cathain to pursue his cause. He is loved by his people and inspires his forces more than anyone else, even the king.

Southwick

The seat of Duke Neville of Cathain, prefect of Southwick. Southwick is the largest of the market towns. It grew as the main town south of the river. The town sits on the side of a valley overlooking the Ursell, a small tributary of the Gellan. The river is not large enough to navigate so trade has always been by merchant caravan to Cathain, which lies to the north.

The town sprawls below the castle that sits proud on the ridge. From there it has commanding views of the surrounding lands. Most of which is well cultivated farm land. The town now exceeds its ancient walls down to the water's edge.

The town provides a useful base for the Adamantite mines to the east and frequent supply caravans head for the mining town. The Mining guild has a strong presence here and the guilds green colors are commonly seen. The Forge guild is also here, but in lesser numbers.

Neville has been prefect here for some 35 years and is respected. He juggles his time between his roles as chamberlain in Cathain and prefect here. In recent months troubles in the mines has meant that he has spent more time here than usual. In his absence his son, Pendril, performs his duties.
